Mike Pence Returns to Washington to Court Ted Cruz, Address Doubts

WASHINGTON – Republican vice presidential pick Mike Pence returned to his old Capitol Hill stomping grounds on Tuesday to court a longtime Donald Trump nemesis and address lingering concerns over the GOP nominee’s standing with minorities and women.

A former House lawmaker from Indiana, Mr. Pence had a lot of ground to cover. In his various meetings behind closed doors, Mr. Pence told stories about Mr. Trump’s penchant for prayer, and offered up a perspective of Mr. Trump that cast some of the candidate’s most ambitious goals, such as winning a majority of the African-American vote, as refreshing optimism.

“He’s basically vouching for Donald Trump,” said Rep. Peter King (R., N.Y.)

Mr. Pence sat down with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who lost the Republican presidential nomination to Mr. Trump but whose endorsement could help boost the Republican nominee’s standing with conservatives. Mr. Cruz was famously booed at the party’s convention in July after he declined to endorse Mr. Trump.

Mr. Cruz didn’t respond to questions about whether he was any closer to endorsing his former rival. But he did lend a hand to the Republican nominee by echoing his attacks of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s recent description of some Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables.” Mr. Cruz said: “That level of contempt from a candidate for the people is really disappointing. It’s a level of condescension.”

Of the meeting with Mr. Pence, Mr. Cruz said: ”It was a very very good meeting. Mike Pence is a good man. He’s a friend. He’s a strong conservative. I was grateful for his strong leadership and his strong support. We had a good and productive conversation.”

Cruz has already self destructed. He’s irrelevant.

Disgusting waste of time. Why give Lyn’ Ted even the time of day? He’s history and his remaining few supporters offer absolutely nothing to Trump. Has Lyn’ Ted endorsed Trump yet?

Sounds like Pence was offering Cruz an olive leaf from Trump. Ted should make peace with the Republican ticket.

Let’s not forget that Ted also called us “low information” for being so stupid as to choose Trump over him

I don’t much like Cruz but I think this is a smart move. There are still many thousands of gop voters who are disinclined to vote for Trump. I was one of them until the last month. Whether it’s Hillary or God-only-knows, Trump needs every vote he can get. He’s got mine, and regardless of the primary season’s vitriol on all sides, it’s over. If Mike Pence can broker peace between these sides, more power to him.

I wonder if Texans will remember that their sitting Senator ommitted mentioning he was a Canadian when he ran in 2012.

What's that old saying about "A lie of omission?"

Note to Ted...do the right thing, endorse Trump. Not to many times in life does a person get a second chance

And if it’s “strange bedfellows” that’s nothing new in politics.

Ted may indorse Trump but he will have to drive a stake through Glenn Beck’s heart first.

In order for Trump to win he has to overcome incredible headwinds, some of which should never ever have been there (yes, the Republican elite).

Obviously it is better to have Cruz an ally rather than an enemy, in Trump’s estimation.

Therefore I support Mr. Trump’s decision, regardless of what I myself have come to think of Mr. Cruz.

All this article tells me is that Cruz hasn’t backed Trump yet. If ever (he will).

If Cruz comes out HIMSELF supporting Trump, ok, I’ll take it.

Now, after ‘courting’ from Pence and/or other sources, it only says that Cruz has a price, like a typical politician.

Forget Cruz! He's damaged goods! He did a "bang up" job of shooting his own foot!
Pun Intended
