Not excusing their decision, but small cars made in America have little or no profit margins.

The philosophy has always been to attract customers with entry level cars, then hope they move up to the more expensive, profitable vehicles as their income increases.

Unfortunately, in the nation of Outsourcing and Rightsizing and Part-timing, the income doesn’t increase any more. If you aren’t a white male, you might get a promotion. Whatever meager increases there are are taken up by health care and food.
