” The precaution is a common one among security advocates, given the relative ease of hacking laptop cameras.”
If it’s that easy to hack the camera, then it means that have already gotten INTO your laptop system to do so.
THEY seem to be more worried about what the camera might show than all the ‘classified’ data on their harddrive.

There was a case in a Philadelphia suburb where school students brought school laptops with cameras home and someone from the school turned on the cameras remotely and was watching some of the kids. It is an issue.

But the same thing could be said for my job, where I have access to sensitive patient information. I still cover the webcam. What you do to your own computer at home is your private business.
What the Feds do is my business.
If I own a private company and you are my employee using my computer, then I would object to you thinking you had a right to alter my equipment in that way.
I dont need the webcam for anything.
Agreed, but the point is not what you need, it is what the company/boss wants.
I know I am drifting far past what the situation in your office might be regarding security, but many people work at jobs where there are security cameras pointed right at them (Banks, for instance). Do you think it is OK for them to put tape over the lenses of the cameras ?
Or maybe it would be fairer for me to ask it this way... If you boss said that the cameras on the computers you use at work would be ON while you were using them (as a security precaution) would you still cover the lens ?

Theres some sensible things you should be doing, and thats one of them, Director James Comey And the other one is removing Comey far away from any position of power or authority. It's a good thing, his days are numbered.

In the case of those school-owned laptops, I am going to guess that they had administrative software that allowed them to easily obtain the privileges and provided the functionality to do just that.

Yep, and it’s pretty arrogant of this corrupt SOB to suddenly offer advice to those he betrayed.

So I see it more as an intrusion than a potential alibi.True. And that's the gist of Comey's response.
However, as a federal employee using taxpayer funded equipment, it should be the other way around. Especially since whenever one of them gets caught misusing their computer, they claim it was 'someone else'.

Your phone can convey your audio, your video (and most have two cameras so it can see what you are looking at, and switch to see you), and it can tell them exactly where you are when it does.

putting a piece of tape over his personal laptop's webcam I tried this but they are still spying on me. Maybe my roll of Scotch tape is defective?

Ps...a bandaid works well, That way sticky stuff isnt left on the lense in case you do need to use it at some point. I like black electrical tape.
Not too sticky - leaves barely any residue...and color matches the frame of the computer.
