Another of Secretary of State John Kerry’s “Hail Mary” diplomatic deal is well on its way to collapsing, this time in Syria.
A seven-day cease-fire was supposed to start Monday across Syria, under an agreement signed last week by Kerry and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. Multiparty talks to end the war were to follow.
But fire is yet to cease, though attacks have diminished in parts of the country. The lull in the half-decade-old civil war wasn’t enough, however, to launch the main task of the week.
The United Nations was to start delivering humanitarian aid to civilians in long-besieged towns, like Aleppo. And “We made everything ready,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters Wednesday. But aid convoys hadn’t yet moved because, as one UN source told me, “We’re still waiting for necessary approval from all sides.”
Neither the Russian-backed Syrian government (which is imposing the Aleppo siege) nor its opponents will guarantee aid workers’ safety while they deliver food, medicine and shelter to besieged women, children and the elderly. Those Syrians are yet to benefit from last week’s amicable Kerry-Lavrov handshake.
Even Kerry himself, reportedly, was skeptical the deal would work. But he signed it anyway because, well, you got to do something, right?

Y’know, the whole point of a siege is keep supplies - food, water, medicine, fuel, etc, - OUT of the city besieged.

There is only one way for this particular war to end, really end. One side has got to beat the other. Unfortunately, because of the culture there will be an orgy of killing by the victors. This is unavoidable regardless of who wins. One reason why I would like the US to stay out of it is the inevitable bloodbath that attends any victory by Islamic fighters. Our “subtle power,” “nuanced,” “smart diplomacy” mavens are babes in the woods when it comes to dealing with people who are not university professors.
The path to minimum death is to help Assad win. He had no problem with the Christians. Note that the Christians are supporting Assad. We are on the wrong side.
The alternative to an Assad win is turning Syria into a permanently failed state that will be a hotbed of radicalism.

The world is just so, because of John Kerry. He see's it, but he doesn't understand it. Because he is John Kerry.
Why doesn’t Kerry-Heinz just have the rebels surrender and end the civil war. Obama/Benghazi Clinton failed and its time to shut down the war, pull out the CIA, our Special Ops, stop providing ammo and replacement parts through Turkey and ISIS. The Arab Spring failed, so give it up.
I would leave, ask the Russians to take over, provide intel on everything we have there and wish ‘em the best of luck.
