The reality is that the political class, including the elected, the pundits, and the media that follow them, are not of the superior intellectual stature that they’ve lived their lives thinking they were. Not even remotely close, on their very best day, when the sun was shining. We’ve been putting the least qualified people in our nation in office for a very long time. If you gave enough media access and money to pretty much anyone from your block, they could take on the political elites. It’s long past time that politics becomes again ‘national service’, as opposed to a means to make narcissists happy about themselves.
Thinking of serving your nation?
His dog in the fight Evan McMuffin is not lovin’ it.
Agreed. That's part of the "peace dividend" we got when the USSR fell.
We've had mediocre leaders in recent decades because we haven't needed decent let alone great leaders, at least until recently. The Cold War was to some extent an organizing principle that kept our population somewhat on its toes. When that ended, we could afford to let ourselves go, and did.
Look how quickly England turned a giant Sir Winston Churchill out once the war was over. Gave him the sack within a few months. Brought him back when Labour made a mess of things, but he was too old by then.
Unfortunately, that's just the way of the world. When people think it's party time, nothing can stop them from naval gazing and partying on. While that's going on, evil men plot and plan.
Eventually they spring their trap, and the roller coaster heads downward into darkness.
Trump could be great, but I'll settle for just good.
