Update on the Massive Power Outage in Puerto Rico
ElVocero.com (Spanish) ^ | September 23, 2016

A government press conference about the massive blackout that has left a large part of the Puerto Rican population without service from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) might be held around 8:00 AM at the Emergency Operations Center.

Earlier in the morning, Governor Alejandro García Padilla reported that close to 1,079,583 customers have PREPA service already.

In addition, the Department of Transportation and Public Works stated that, despite the restoration of service to some parts of the [San Juan] Metropolitan Area, the Urban Train will not resume service immediately. "Rigorous safety tests have to be done," the agency reported through Twitter.

Furthermore, the employees and patients of the Cardiovascular Center of the Caribbean may return as different medical procedures are being performed as usual.

The last information from yesterday evening indicated that classes at public schools were suspended, although teachers were directed to report to school.

All other public employees are directed to report to work at 10:00 AM today. Employees at those government offices where there is power will work normally.

The University of Puerto Rico will not hold classes today either. Also, an executive order was signed declaring a state of emergency in the island, prompting the Nutritional Assistance Program to provide aid to families on Saturday, September 24.

I don’t have many good things to about the government on Guam. But it took them only about two weeks to restore power without black outs when two of the biggest power stations here caught fire and exploded. Yeah, we don’t have near the population but are far more isolated.

I assume the government of Guam owns the electric utility there.

The blackout took place on Wednesday with a fire in one of the electric plants. The way the grid is designed, power was knocked out all over the island.

Blackouts, coming soon to American neighborhoods near you?

Crumbling electric grids and infrastructure plus idiotic "green" energy polcies make it likely.

Also, the government has ruled out sabotage.

“A government press conference about the massive blackout that has left a large part of the Puerto Rican population without service from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) might be held around 8:00 AM at the Emergency Operations Center.”

They need to explain how all those without power are going to listen to the press conference.

Well, you can only hope the affected folks have either an electric generator or a battery-operated radio.

No kidding?

Did they wait until the fire was out?

The cause was environmentalists, as they have fought tooth and nail against an LNG pipeline for years thus delaying the construction of a new gas power plant

An older power plant had a fire and had to go offline. This caused the power grid to fail.

Reminds me of a joke...Why are there no Puerto Ricans on Star Trek?
A: Because they're not working in the future either!

My apologies for the lack of communication during this big news event, but I had been in Europe for the last two weeks. And I wouldn’t have been able to do anything without power, anyway, had I been on the island. So thanks to rrstar96 for taking over.

My understanding is that PR’s utility is heavy oil fired.

What is the source of this residual oil?
