Senators already eyeing changes to 9/11 bill after veto override (Graham & McCain included)

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said lawmakers need to make sure they didn't open "Pandora's box" and reassure Saudi Arabia that Congress isn't "finding them guilty of 9/11."

"I think the things we can do that would preserve the right to sue here in America ... but also minimize the exposure we have overseas," he added. "We need to think hard about how to modify this bill."

Graham, who supported the veto override, estimated that approximately 20 senators currently support changing the bill, something he thinks could happen as soon as the end-of-year lame-duck session.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who also supported the veto override, said he agrees that 9/11 families deserve an "outlet" and has had talks with "people in Europe about a tribunal being set up."

But senators would likely face an uphill battle, with the legislation easily passing through Congress unanimously earlier this year. Graham said he's had "brief" conversations with Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who spearheaded JASTA.

Cornyn, however, downplayed the chances of tweaks to the legislation passing Congress.

"I'll talk to anybody," he told reporters. "But I can't imagine what those [changes] would be."

Twenty-eight senators, including Graham, sent a letter to Cornyn and Schumer on Wednesday saying that "concerns have been raised regarding potential unintended consequences."

"We would hope to work with you in a constructive manner to appropriately mitigate those unintended consequences," they said in the letter.

In addition to Corker and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), the top members of the Foreign Relations Committee, the letter was signed by Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the Intelligence Committee, and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the top members of the Armed Services Committee.

Well, the circus parade went by today with the veto override, and now the sweepers are out to clean up.

FLASHBACK:

The Saudi ambassador, Mr. Jubeir, has long been courting members of Congress who could pressure the administration to get more involved in Syria. He found early support from Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

(snip)

Mr. Petraeus in mid-2012 won White House approval to provide intelligence and limited training to Syrian rebels at the base, including in the use of arms provided by others. Saudi and Jordanian agents began vetting the fighters to be trained, said Arab diplomats and a former U.S. military official.

Prince Bandar has largely stayed out of Washington but held meetings with U.S. officials in the region. One was in September 2012. Sens. McCain and Graham, who were in Istanbul, met him in an opulent hotel suite on the banks of the Bosporus.

Mr. McCain said he made the case to Prince Bandar that the rebels weren’t getting the kinds of weapons they needed, and the prince, in turn, described the kingdom’s plans. The senator said that in succeeding months he saw “a dramatic increase in Saudi involvement, hands-on, by Bandar.”

This is one of those types of bills to be left alone so the courts can put it through its paces. Congress passed it. Leave it alone, and let the processes begin. A better result will come.

Now it is starting to become clear...
John McCain and his friends are involved financially with the Saudi $$$ flow.
Now if we can just find the connection.

Other countries being able to sue us? What if some international court says that the families of people blown up in Iraq can sue the U.S in world court...

At least that’s pretty much the only thing (not that I agree with it, or wouldn’t say ‘you and what army’), but the only thing I can think of.

That and pissing off the Saudis, but since those bastards want to kill us eff ‘em.

“concerns have been raised regarding potential unintended consequences.”

Fact that OPEC voted to cut output for the first time, just after the Senate voted?

This means that somehow the Legislation will Make the US Taxpayers Liable, while the Saudi’s admit Liability with admitting any Wrongdoing., Maybe pay a Fine to the Government.
