The New York Times risked legal trouble to publish Donald Trump’s tax return
Washington Post ^ | October 2, 2016 | Callum Borchers

Dean Baquet wasn't bluffing.

The New York Times executive editor said during a visit to Harvard in September that he would risk jail to publish Donald Trump's tax returns. He made good on his word Saturday night when the Times published Trump tax documents from 1995, which show the Republican presidential nominee claimed losses of $916 million that year — enough to avoid paying federal income taxes for as many as 18 years afterward.

Federal law makes it illegal to publish an unauthorized tax return:

It shall be unlawful for any person to whom any return or return information (as defined in section 6103(b)) is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law any such return or return information. Any violation of this paragraph shall be a felony punishable by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.

Baquet said during a panel discussion at Harvard that if the Times' lawyers advised him not to publish Trump tax returns, he would argue that such information is vital to the public interest because the real estate mogul's "whole campaign is built on his success as a businessman and his wealth."

It is unclear whether Baquet was speaking hypothetically at the time or whether his newspaper already was in possession of the documents published Saturday. The Times wrote that "the pages were mailed last month to Susanne Craig, a reporter at the Times who has written about Mr. Trump’s finances...

The Washington Post considers him to be a hero. As a matter of fact, they claim they would do the same thing:

Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward, who joined Baquet on the Harvard panel and also said he would risk jail to publish Trump's tax returns, joked during the talk that in the event of a criminal conviction, perhaps everyone in the newsroom could serve one day of the sentence.

"Everyone in the newsroom," he joked. It is telling that everyone in the newsroom (or at least many as I know he was joking but I think many would for sure) at the Washington Post is so biased against Trump that they are willing to break the law to expose his tax returns. These are taxes that the IRS has presumably found nothing illegal with. These are taxes that Trump does not legally have to release to be President. Yet despite this, the entire Washington Post newsroom is so opposed to Trump that they are willing to alternate days in jail to bring out his tax returns so they can find something that he did legally (like what is in the 1995 return) and use it against him to help Hillary.

Would the NYT and WaPo risk so much to get their hands on Hillary's deleted emails?

The Trump Justice Department is going to have a field day. I wonder if Carlos Slim can be sent to prison for this.

Gosh.

It’s almost like the press and government employees put the Democrat Party ahead of their country and its laws.

So—How did the NYT come by Trump’s 1995 return?

I seem to recall people in the Nixon administration going to jail for having citizen’s private information in their possession.

You’d think Trump violated the espionage or federal records act. Then used bleach bit to obstruct justice with the intent to cover up a crime.

Spit.

Concerning Democrat stuff, if I were one of them, I’d be watching for my life big time. I get a chuckle when I read this and think about the Mary Tyler Moore episode in which she apparently had to go to jail from trouble she got into over a source for a story.

We are living in a communists dictatorship and the cartel is so huge that they could even kill and get off. America is in trouble and may never recover. We are a lost Country. The NYT is under the protection umbrella of King Obama.

Only hope: Trump for President.

I just loved how Bob Woodward said that he would be willing to risk jail time for publishing future President Trump’s tax returns. He “joked” that the reporters could share jail time.

The relay jail sentence must be similar to th relay fast.

Good question.

A long time ago I saw this panel on journalistic ethics and I believe said to the effect the journalist’s duty to the truth is why they’re not bound by ethics or oath of loyalty to follow the law and love of one’s country. I’m paraphrasing here from memory.

A general was outraged on listening to it and said that kind of view could endanger lives of troops operating in enemy territory. Wallace repeated the story is the first consideration.

Now Trump’s tax return. Their unmitigated sheer chutzpah is a sight to behold. They accuse Trump of every manner of reproach and look what they’re doing here! They’re not coming into the court of public opinion with clean hands.

And mucking about in people’s personal lives is not doing the public a service - in fact, its a complete disgrace. No wonder people think so little of the Fourth Estate. This episode is another nail in its coffin.

Just when you thought they couldn’t sink lower, they’ve set a new low, indeed.

No wonder Trump was so late to his rally last night. Probably was in conference with his lawyers..when he came out he looked very perturbed. his demeanor as he walked across the platform to the podium spoke volumes. Everyone was wondering why he was taking so long to make an appearance but I think that was answered this morning with his IRS tax forms released without his permission! We all had a sense something had happened To make him extremely late! The New York Times needs to go to prison all of them they were in collusion with IRS department!!
