Hoax.
Hoax is always a possibility. But what evidence do you have to declare it so? The local TV station followed it up with Expedia, the complainant got her travel re-booked, her original money was refunded and she got a $500 voucher on top.
Sounds like a mea culpa to me. Good on Expedia to finally make it right.
