We better be very careful with this. This could backfire big time. We could end up funding madrasses.
School is a primary way to acculturate new generations to the dominant, accepted culture. Religion is a huge part of culture. It makes absolutely no sense to have true “religious freedom” in a country because two religions, such as Christianity and Islam, can be poles apart, and cannot peacefully coexist.
One can have religious freedom only to the extend that every religion in the country accepts the dominant culture of the country, or is subservient to that culture, especially when it comes to the actual physical practice of the religion.
For example, Islam would have to condemn any physical harm to non believers, or an apostate, or adulterer, etc. They would probably be OK if they said those people would go to hell, like Christians do, as in the case of people that don’t believe in God, or Christ. But they don’t call for physical harm to those people in the current life.
I don’t see Islam making that change any time soon.
