Eleanor Roosevelt’s ‘mistress’ died heartbroken and alone
New York Post ^ | October 22. 2016 | Brooke Hauser

They called each other “darling,” “dear one” and “heart.” They told each other “je t’aime” and “j’adore,” and wrote more than 3,000 letters to one another.

“All day I’ve thought of you . . . Oh! I want to put my arms around you, I ache to hold you close,” the normally reserved Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in March 1933 to her beloved. No, not her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but a brilliant, bourbon-drinking, cigarette-smoking Associated Press reporter named Lorena Hickok, or Hick.

Their romance is at the center of Susan Quinn’s engrossing double biography, “Eleanor and Hick: The Love Affair That Shaped a First Lady.”

While Quinn is not the first to tell the tale of Eleanor and Hick, she brings new depth to their epic, three-decade-long love story.

Quinn’s book begins in 1932, shortly before Hick began covering Eleanor Roosevelt during FDR’s presidential campaign. “THE DAME HAS ENORMOUS DIGNITY, SHE’S A PERSON,” she wired her boss, after observing Eleanor’s unease with the spotlight at that year’s Democratic convention.

Hick spent the following weeks as “Eleanor’s appendage,” Quinn writes, traveling on the campaign trail and earning her trust. (Eleanor told Hick that she “never wanted to be a president’s wife, and I don’t want it now.”)

By the time FDR was inaugurated in 1933, the two women had fallen in love. The evening before FDR delivered his famous line about having nothing to fear but “fear itself,” Eleanor read it to her girlfriend. Hick had a singular scoop — the president’s first speech — but out of loyalty to the first lady, she let it go.

So that explains why Hillary is such an admirer of Eleanor Roosevelt.

BTW, TigerClaws posted this on 9/27/16 How prim and proper First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt fell in love with a 200-pound WOMAN (tr)

And of course there was the time when Hillary was "channeling" Eleanor Roosevelt in the White House? "Remember When Hillary Clinton Maybe Communed With Dead Eleanor Roosevelt's Ghost at the White House? (from Gawker, sorry about that, also I'm getting a security warning on Firefox, but not on IE)

Also HILLARY 'TALKING TO FAMOUS DEAD AMERICAN'

It seems the White House has been the scene of much perversion and debauchery throughout the history of our nation. However, the statists just keep taking it to a higher lower level.

My only concern would be the blackmail angle. Was any pressure brought to bear on FDR to keep this quiet?

Did foreign intelligence agencies know?

And here I thought that Roosevelt being Eleanor’s maiden name was bad enough.

While I don't have an opinion of Mrs. Roosevelt and Hick, I'd like to admonish those who look at past correspondences the way we might today. The French in particular have a way of gushing that doesn't necessarily imply anything sexual.

There was a time when women could be affectionate with each other without lesbianism being assumed. Look at some 1950's vintage Archie comic books, and you will see Betty and Veronica holding hands. It was normal before EVERYTHING had to have a sexual undertone. The stupid term "bromance" is used to apply to guys who were just buddies.

Our loss.

60 years ago people talked very differently. LGBT want to make any expressed affection to fall into a sexual matter. Like Abraham Lincoln sharing a bed with another man.

Well, I kind of agree with you. This does look a bit like a Boston Marriage but who really knows? I’m surprised someone hasn’t tried to make Annie Sullivan & Helen Keller into lovers!

Well said, and very true. Female friendships during the Victorian Period were much different than they are now. I’m old fashioned, and tell my closest and dearest friend that I love her...because basically, we’re family.
