A fire broke out at a former steel factory in Lackawanna, N.Y., on Wednesday morning, the Lackawanna Police Department said.
The fire at the former Bethlehem Steel factory complex in the small city just south of Buffalo, adjacent to Lake Erie, sent a thick cloud of black smoke into the sky, seen in images shared on social media.
The police urged residents to shelter in place. Hundreds of firefighters and other emergency workers from nearby jurisdictions had yet to control the fire, the police said Wednesday afternoon. There were no reported injuries but officials cautioned that investigators had not yet entered the building. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

My understanding is that there were several businesses located in the building.
They are comparing it to a fire in Lockport that claimed the life of one of the kids who started it. I didn’t hear about that one until just now.

Apparently it was very acrid due to plastics.
There was a storage business there and people stored their boats there.

I remember driving past Bethlehem Steel back in the day when they were actively making steel, when we went to South Buffalo to visit family.
We’d always count how many colors of smoke were coming out of the stacks. And it smelled horrible.
Was that the Skyway that was closed down or Rt 5 further south of that?
I was just in Lackawanna a couple months ago. It’s overrun by Muslims.

The sky way was open roads were blocked from Lakeside Ave to Ridge. It all may reopen if they get it under control. I was a 4 alarm with units from all over including my town of Grand Island.
My grandfather worked there fresh off the boat (via Ellis Island) from Europe.
I remember reading some years ago that there is a terror cell in Lackawanna. They were being investigated just after 9/11, IIRC.
