Donald Trump Likely to End Aid for Rebels Fighting Syrian Government
New York Times ^ | Nov 11 2016 | David Sanger

President-elect Donald J. Trump said Friday that he was likely to abandon the American effort to support “moderate” opposition groups in Syria who are battling the government of President Bashar al-Assad, saying “we have no idea who these people are.”

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal that dealt largely with economic issues, including his willingness to retain parts of the Affordable Care Act, he repeated a position he took often during his campaign: that the United States should focus on defeating the Islamic State, and find common ground with the Syrians and their Russian backers.

Obama hated that Assad protected Christians in Syria. Couldn’t have that. Obama has had our boys helping the enemy.

He already opined we were, once again, arming entities that we could not know with any certainty would not allow those armaments to be used against us and our interests - shouldn’t be any surprise he is still thinking the same way.

Yes we do know who they are.

They belong to an organization with standing declarations of war, conquest, enslavement, and genocide against all mankind.

Is not this vetting enough?

And withdraw our monetary support for the UN. Crammed full of American haters anyway. The UN site is prime real estate. May as well rent it out to decent tenants. Aside from that, get our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq while he’s at it.

I have no idea why we were fighting to remove Bashir al-Assad from office in the first place. As a sort of secular dictator in an Islamic country, he was probably as good as Hosni Mubarak, and maybe the equal of Muammar Gaddafi, both harsh men in their way, but those who succeeded them in the national leadership were much, much worse. The Arab Spring swept through these countries, fueled by a rising tide of Islamic radicalism, accompanied by terrorism and ruthless extermination of rivals and even a number of helpless bystanders. Genocide became the order of the day as the radical Islamic “reformers” tightened their grips, whole provinces suffered wholesale slaughter and persecution for not being the “right kind” of Muslim.

The retreat of the US presence was the direct precursor of these events, and it may all be laid at one doorstep - that leading to the White Hut in the years following January 2009.

Syria is not and never should have been our war, and in fact, should never have risen to the level of armed combat. The absence of the US from Iraq and Afghanistan only invited in the Russian Federation and Iranian presence, and it is now essentially THEIR war, fighting the very forces that the Current Regime in the territory once known as “the United States of America” is trying so very desperately to keep armed and supplied.

Good..and by the way there is NO such thing as a “moderate” in Syria, like McCain’s little buddies, they are Jihadists..they want to fix their own country, FINE, we have to fix our OWN problems first

That will end the war quickly and save hundreds of thousands of lives.

We have been supporting the wrong side.

Really. The choice is Al-Sisi or the MB. Assad or Isis.
Since 1970, there has been an Assad in power in Syria. We lived with it. We’ll live with this one.

I hope so. These “rebels” are all ISIS or Saudi-influenced groups.

The problem in the ME is that the Muslim factions don’t respect anything but force, which is why I hope Assad (an Allawite considered heretical by both major groups) can get the ear of the US. The Russians are clearly supporting Assad and I don’t care how many US-funded ISIS loonies the Russians kill - but perhaps the Russians need to work a little more on public presentation, since the US press is against them.

These “rebels” are all ISIS or Saudi-influenced groups and there’s no way we should give a dime to them. They kill our troops, the very same ones who have trained them, whenever they can.

Obama wanted a Muslim Brotherhood government in Syria to get rid of the Christians. Good move by Trump.
