He was a kid, really, barely 18, but he and his brother joined the army to stop the communists. And that is did. At last, he will be brought home to Arizona, 65 years later. PFC Dan Hunt was with a UN force in a month long slug-fest, along Heartbreak Ridge, a just north of what is now the Demilitarized Zone.

Dany was wounded in the head by shrapnel during the fighting. His CO told Daniel that he didn’t have to go back, He was treated, and he returned to his unit. He was wounded again, this time in the leg. Again, he was treated and returned to his unit.

Then he got killed, one of many thousands of U.N., North Korean and Chinese soldiers. Brothers gave DNA in hopes of finding him. The site of the battle where Daniel was killed was excavated by Korea. When the remains they found didn’t match of their own casualties they sent them to the U.S.

So that is where he has been since Sept. 28, 1951. “We have three Purple Hearts that he earned”.

When the hullabaloo about the Virginia battle flag, it isn’t the Confederate flag, was at its height, I attended a car show in Moultrie, Georgia. The attendees in this particular building were at least thirty percent black. Suddenly, a space opened in the crowd and I saw a booth selling all sizes of the stars and bars flag. I glanced around to see if I was about to be in a riot. Not a single black person was even interested. Everybody behaved normally. I watched a muscular young black man jovially talking to the booth’s white, fat, bearded proprietor. Suddenly, the whole fake issue came into focus for me. I felt wonderful.
