And there was no reason for a staff of that size in the first place.
A president actually appoints about 3,000 people, but 1,000 or more are bureaucrats that can’t really be fired by the next president. Every president manages to change a number of policy-making appointees into civil service status before they leave. Obama will abuse that, and it will take dramatic action by Congress to even minimally rein in bureaucrat snakes.

He's probably just firing the political staff. The White House has plenty of staffers to do things like mow the lawn, clean, maintain and repair the building and furnishings, archivists, waiters, chefs, florists, logistics people, event managers, horiticulturalists for the trees and shrubs, butlers, etc etc. There are even White House calligraphers for state dinners for foreign dignitaries. A lot of those people work through successions of Admins of both parties.
