Let’s see...I was about 8 or 9 years old during the Cuban missile crisis. We watched what seemed like an unending convoy of jeeps, trucks, tanks and other equipment moving down Hwy 27 in Clewiston, FL towards Homestead.

Then we had civil defense drills.

Wasn’t “duck and cover” fun?

Ah, that takes me back. The Cuban Missile Crisis was during my first year of teaching in Austin, TX. The situation was very tense and in the middle of the day, all the sirens went off, and we all did the duck and cover we had practiced. (Yes, it was stupid.) The Director of Emergency Preparedness apologized later that the tornado warning sirens were undergoing their regular testing, and perhaps that wasn’t the best time for them to go off! Ah, bureaucracy.
