Ankara said it will retaliate after three of its soldiers were killed in a suspected air strike by the Syrian Air Force in the province of Aleppo.
The attack occurred last night during a Turkey-backed militants operation in northern Syria, the Turkish military said in a statement. 10 other soldiers were wounded in the air strike that it assessed to have been carried out by Syrian regime forces. No details about the location of air strike have been provided.
It is clear that some people are not happy with this battle Turkey has been fighting against Daesh (Islamic State). This attack will surely have a retaliation, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters on Thursday.
7 other Turkish soldiers were wounded in Syria later on Thursday, Turkish Dogan news agency said. There is no information who is responsible for the second attack.
Current escalations between Turkey and the Syrian government and between Turkey and Kurdish YPG forces in northern Syria took place over the key Syrian town of al-Bab that is currently under control of ISIS.
Turkey troops have ZERO right to be INSIDE Syria...ZERO!
So Turkish troops, inside Syria, and assisting anti-Syrian terrrorists are hit in an airstrike aimed at the terrorists.
Maybe the Turks should stay on their side of the border.
Turkey has a large air force, navy and army. If they retaliate this could easily involve the Russians, which may be the Syrian plan. Putin is riding a nationalistic fever to new heights of popularity. That would surely change if lots of body bags come home. So far I think the war has been relatively low-cost in terms of Russian lives.
If the Russians start losing lots of people look for them to rapidly escalate to weapons the Turks don’t have. They will probably go to fuel-air bombs and imply they’ll use tactical nukes. Putin simply can’t afford to lose popularity at home. That would combine with other issues to get him removed from power (killed.)
That’s what I was thinking too. This could escalate really quickly.
Freaking Turks! They will go to war with Syria and then Russia and will expect the USA to back them up because of the NATO charter. The problem is the Turks have no right to be inside Syria.
They are in Iraq and in Syria. They want that damn pipeline. They will conquer and keep territory to get it.
“If they retaliate this could easily involve the Russians, which may be the Syrian plan.”
It would have to in all likelihood. Assad can’t quite finish the stinkbag jihadis we have mustered, much less a competent combined arms force from a country which has not been eviscerated by foreign fed civil war.
At least, SO FAR Turkey has not been eviscerated by foreign fed civil war.
It was 1 year ago when the Turks shot down the Russian plane on the Syria/Turkey border in disputed territory.
You come to whatever conclusion you want to. This is very very bad. Turkey is NATO (at least for now).
Why is Turkey invading a sovereign nation. They have no right there!! We lost our first soldier there today!!. We have no right there. The Russians are invited there to fight the insurgents. We we fight the sovereign elected government is Syria— we are FIGHTING RUSSIANS!! That is madness!! This thing could cause a massive conflagration!! Why don’t we just mind OUR OWN BUSINESS? The people of this country will not tolerate fighting anymore illegal wars!! We don’t give a crap.
Wouldn’t that require approval from our Congress?
Agree.
remember:
Incirlik air base
Turkey has ZERO right to expect ANY help from any NATO country if it is retaliated against by Syria AND/OR ITS ALLIES.
Incirlik
Ask McCain about what we are doing there. He seems to be in charge here.
“Incirlik air base”
The Turks probably want the US and NATO involved, but only if they get to call the shots. Everybody has picked out a different enemy. I am hoping there are no shooting incidents with US forces.
Incidentally, an Ottoman (now Turkey) tactic was to stage attacks and make it look like somebody else carried them out.
I hope the dangerous Syrian-Iranian alliance will have a ‘problem’ with Turkey...
I always thought the name "turkey" doesn't match the nature of the birds.
I would rather they be called something like "Self-Basting Freezer Eagles".
I do not foresee an international fire from it as of now... But Turkey being allied with Syria-Iran isn’t a positive thing - an understatement. So this discomfort between them is a positive thing.
