The real reasons the U.S. became less racist toward Asian Americans
Jeff Guo

Posted on 11/30/2016 9:36:52 AM PST by ErikJohnsky

Between 1940 and 1970, something remarkable happened to Asian Americans. Not only did they surpass African Americans in average household earnings, but they also closed the wage gap with whites.

...

[The real secret to Asian American success was not education]

How did that happen? About the same time that Asian Americans were climbing the socioeconomic ladder, they also experienced a major shift in their public image. At the outset of the 20th century, Asian Americans had often been portrayed as threatening, exotic and degenerate. But by the 1950s and 1960s, the idea of the model minority had begun to take root. Newspapers often glorified Asian Americans as industrious, law-abiding citizens who kept their heads down and never complained.

Some people think that racism toward Asians diminished because Asians “proved themselves” through their actions. But that is only a sliver of the truth. Then, as now, the stories of successful Asians were elevated, while the stories of less successful Asians were diminished. As historian Ellen Wu explains in her book, “The Color of Success,” the model minority stereotype has a fascinating origin story, one that’s tangled up in geopolitics, the Cold War and the civil rights movement.

Message: Don’t believe the facts, or your own lying eyes, about Asians studying hard, getting good grades, have sound families, having low crime rates or high savings rates; having anything to do with why they are better perceived than blacks, or why they enjoy better economic outcomes than blacks.

In the alt-left view of reality, it is all about politics and media messaging - that is the REAL difference between Asians and Blacks in America. It is an article of unimpeachable faith that white racism is the paramount factor in all things in life.

It is family cohesion and work ethic. Blacks and progressives have lost both. Work ethic is allowing hispanics to fare far better than blacks. My extended family consists of white, Mexicans and Asians in good numbers. The threats to ethnic and racial groups are Marxism (no. 1), welfare state dependency, narco gangs, the drugs themselves and culture disfunction. There are good and bad in every group. The growing meth and progressivist groups thriving among whites have to be addressed before you can condem any entire ethnicity or race.

That is one of the best movies EVER-—and I’ve strongly encouraged my grandchildren to see it.

The real reason for asian acceptance is that asian girls are incredibly hot...

Nailed it! Not only hot, but great personality and feminine. Not like a certain dark racial group with a large percentage of females that tend to throw tantrums.

The motorcycle I learned to ride back in the late 60’s, was a friend’s Yamaha 90. First bike I bought, was a 1980 Yamaha 750. The one after that is my current 2014 FJR1300?

Love my Yammies.

“The average Asian came here a 150 years ago to work on the railroad. And they still lived in ghettos in the wast coast cities.”

In Hawaii they came to work in the sugar cane fields, they were not educated, now they virtually run the place.

As a white male I’ve never bought into that particular fetish. Especially the tiny little China doll types with no boobs. I like a lady with some curves.

After a child is born in the US they have no accent. They think and talk American.

Your thesis has holes in it. Some remnants may have teeth. But not all.

My wife is Chinese-American. She and her five siblings spoke only Chinese until they entered public school as 5-year-olds. They still speak Chinese as well as perfect English. So no, after Asian children are born in the USA, they don't necessarily speak English with no accent right away. Many enter public school in confusion until they pick up English by association with others. And a lot of Asians didn't come here just to work the railroads. A lot were sailors or workers who came to work farms or do other work. Some of that had to do with racist policies in play. When there were restrictions or outright bans on one race, say Chinese, then employers brought in Japanese. Then Filipinos and so on. Not all were in ghettos, as many were farm workers. A big example are the Japanese, who converted unusable land into rich farmland in California's central valley, only to have it taken away when they were sent to concentration camps.

As for African-Americans, they had it the worst. Many want out of the ghetto, but peer pressure is strong. I have well-to-do black friends who lament that their grown kids want to hang out with ghetto kids and they mimic ghetto talk. That's a tragedy.

That’s what my OP imolied; Asians work, while the blacks need to improve in that area. Well native born blacks; non-Muslim African immigrants are actually really smart (and those ones are virtually always here LEGALLY)

I want one of those PLO military mole girls who work in take out Chinese restaurants and scream orders at guys in the kitchen. I feel the need for direction. 50 shades of soy sauce.

Asians have similar work and family ethics as whites, and also the intelligence to compete with them. Other groups don’t, and it explains the great disparities in achievement.

I used to frequent a few Mom & Pop Italian restaurants in NJ. In a couple, the kids would be in there doing their homework. And they were always nice to my (asian) wife and son. Family values.

Yeah, because everyone knows about Asian History Month, and a lot of schools teach about the accomplishments of Sun Yat-Sen right alongside Martin Luther King.

Thomas Sowell identifies Asian culture — especially Chinese culture — as valuing thrift, sobriety, personal discipline, hard work, practical wisdom, and education to such a degree as to make Asians successful in the US and around the world. This seems to be on the mark.
