President Duterte: Trump says Philippines fighting drugs ‘the right way’

MANILA, Dec 3 — US President-elect Donald Trump told Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte that Manila was conducting its deadly drug war “the right way,” Duterte said today, in stark contrast to the criticism he received from President Barack Obama.

The Philippine president called Trump late yesterday evening to congratulate him on his election victory with Trump wishing him “success” in his controversial anti-crime crackdown, in which some 4,800 people have been killed since June, according to Duterte.

“He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well... in my campaign and he said that... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way,” Duterte said in a statement today.

Duterte, 71, launched an unprecedented war on drugs that drew a wave of global criticism with Obama urging the leader in September to conduct his campaign “the right way” following concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings.

Trump's office released a brief statement following the conversation, saying Duterte had congratulated Trump and the two agreed to work together closely.

Duterte won presidential elections in May after pledging to kill tens of thousands of drug suspects, warning that otherwise the Philippines would turn into a narco-state.

Since assuming office, he has called on police and even civilians to kill drug users.

Duterte also said he would be “happy to slaughter” three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.

In October Duterte announced a "separation" from the United States and had called for the withdrawal of American troops from his country, putting into question Manila's 70-year-old alliance with Washington.

But today, Duterte said he “could sense a good rapport” with an “animated” Trump.

Video released by Duterte's office showed the Philippine leader laughing as he chatted on the phone, later saying Trump would would be “a good president for the United States of America.”

Duterte said the president-elect invited him to visit New York and Washington DC and he returned the favour by asking Trump to attend a regional summit that the Philippines is set to host next year.

“If I’m around, he wants to be notified of my presence,” Duterte said.

If the US media is outraged, then it’s good.

So are people in the Phillipines fully armed to fight back against drug lords?

It’s called a “War on drugs”.
Not an argument. Not a disagreement. Not a tiff

not to spoil the party but drug dealers are a little different than Jews who did nothing wrong. I’m not sure in what context his comparison to Hitler was made.

But he has the right idea about wiping out narcotics dealers. I’m surprised police going along with it as they are usually on the payroll of the traffickers.

The hypocrisy is strong with the leftist one...

It would not surprise me, for example, if it were the case that the “drug war” is handled the same way in Cuba as it is being handled in the Philippines, but one would never hear anyone on the left criticize Raul the way they are criticizing Rodrigo. (Ditto China.)

The problem for those on our side is that a dictator is a dictator is a dictator, even when he is somehow elected, as Duterte was (so was Hitler, at first), and tyranny is the enemy of freedom, while the rule of law, which Duterte is not following, is the friend of freedom. Maybe there is no other way to handle the drug problem in the Philippines, but let’s not kid ourselves: to paraphrase FDR, Duterte may be our sonovab*tch, but he’s still a sonovab*tch.

How will Trump infuriate Libs today?

We can craft some kind of game out of this. It should involve alcohol.

The only way to really make an impact on the War on Drugs is to really make it unprofitable.

You have to target the source: the dealers and supply chain. Cripple that by making it so unprofitable the drug trade will slow. That means taking the gloves off in how we deal with this issue.

We also need another national campaign to Just Say No. Libs criticized it in the 80s but it was working.

We have to change the national dialogue on this topic and make it clear that doing drugs makes you a loser.

Yes.

Shooting drug dealers on sight is better than Narcan in every firehouse.

Was Harrison Ford holding up the Trump signed for real?
Or was it photoshopped?

The problem was that the rule of law was not used in the first place against drug use. When government decide to dictate the actions of their citizens it is asking for laws to be ignored or abused which is why government should very seldom make and enforce laws.

Drug use is not a problem easily solved by government diktat which leads to a weakening of people’s willingness to follow the laws. But if you agree that drugs must be eliminated by the government then Durate is the natural outcome.

They shouldn't be shot on sight. we aren't barbarians after all.

they should be captured so we can waterboard them until they give up useful intel and if their intel leads to bigger fish, or large amounts of drugs and/or cash, they should be allowed to live.

Wow! That was freaky. Knew it was Ford scrolling down to just the tip of his head. Surprised he’s for Trump. Though have thought he’s gone a bit senile the past few years.

Ha, Trump is building relations and he’s not been sworn in yet. He’s scoring better than our Terrorist in Chief who’s done nothing but tear down foreign relations.
