Why should Abe? The Japan of 1932 and the Japan of 2016 are worlds apart.
The two Japanese emissaries arrived at Cordell Hull’s office too late for the declaration to be given. However “Magic” had given us the intelligence on the attack and Stark sat on it. Kimmel got a Telegram eight hours after the attack. It wasn’t even labeled “priority”.
About four years ago a great book re-writing history, came out showing the level of involvement by Harry Dexter White on behalf of the Soviets in forcing Japan into attacking us at Pearl rather than the Soviets.
FDR’s government was riddled with Soviet agents and sympathizers. Nixon made his chops as a congressman dragging these high class ivy league communists into congressional hearing.
Buy Operation Snow by John Koster. Very documented in its assertions. It shows how the leftist press hid this just like it hid all the others exposed by Chambers.
If there’s any groveling to be done, the 0bomb is the most likely to be the groveler.
As were the two cities that we’re nuked. Clearly an invasion of Japan would have been much worse for both sides and a quick and decisive end to the war was best.
Even if it wasn’t, it’s silly to apologize for something that was done 75 years ago by people who aren’t even alive today.
Probably not every Japanese prime minister should do so, but has any ever done so? We’re not talking about some run of the mill conflict like the War of the Roses or something. Every nation has done wrong in war, including our own but the Axis powers in WWII deliberately set out to subjugate whole races of people and committed unspeakable crimes on an industrial scale. There was simply no justification for the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese WANTED war, and they got it good and hard.
If not an apology for WWII, has the Japanese government ever apologized for the Rape of Nanking or the Korean comfort women? How about medical experiments on American POWs?
Nan desu ka "Obummer"?
Was it a “dirty move” for the U.S. to send military support to the Chinese without declaring war against Japan?
Will Obama apologize? I am more offended at his presence at Pearl Harbor than the Japo PM
Put me squarely in the “time to get over it, let it go, and move on already” camp as well.
75 years is basically three generations, and almost everyone who was involved is gone.
Why apologize? My granfather who served in Japan would never consider it relevant either.
I assume that Obama didn’t apologize because Japan attacked us. And it cost us hundreds of thousands of lives to respond. And other countries lost as much or more.
I don’t think we are asking for an apology today. Japan and their emperor made all their apologies and all their promises to act like a decent world citizen back 60 years ago.
Japan is a good friend of the US. The press should not be starting a fight like the Chinese government does. The US and Japan need each other if we are to counter balance China.
Correct. Iive in Japn (Tokyo), as well as many other FReepers do, and I have never met anyone here that brings up war history and it’s perceived wrongs. And I’ve even met WW II veterans here and they just say, “yup, we had that war, didn’t we. And I’m happy to talk with you, young man, about that time. Check this little diddly out. Nice to meet you...”
Of course he’s not going to apologize. What the hell kind of leader would humiliate his country by going around the world apologizing for their country past actions? A weak one, one who wants his nation to appear weak, that’s what kind.
Shocked. /s
No Jap ever apologized for anything. I see that as a big problem. While the Germans outlawed Naziism, the Japs welcomed their human-vivisectionist doctors to run clinics back home.
And the japs have expressed exactly none of it. Most Japs don't even know about WWII. It's not taught in school.
Their surrender was sufficient for me.
