Truman might have been impeached had we not used the atomic bombs that ended WWII. We all know about the projected casualties of a land invasion of Japan.

Those two bombs likely saved half a million American lives, and untold millions of Japanese lives.

No apology is necessary.

All is forgiven.

This might not be a popular but there is nothing to apologize for. Pearl Harbor was a legitimate military target.

War was not declared, there are no legitimate military targets in peacetime. It was a cowardly and shameful act.

I intensely dislike this trend of “apologizing” for the past. War is ugly. Japan has been an exemplary ally since rebuilding from their utter defeat and destruction at our hands. They’ve emulated us, learned from us and given much to the world since then. Stop it with the ritualized public humiliation.

Concur - it was the backstabbing politicians including the still negotiating ambassador in DC that were to blame.

I neither expect nor desire an apology from Mr. Abe or anyone else in the Japanese government. At this point, it would be nothing but empty words. The only apology that would carry weight would have to come from Emperor Akihito, on behalf of his late father, Emperor Hirohito. And that’s only if a current emperor can speak on behalf of a previous one. (I have no idea how things like that work in their system.)

What Japan COULD, and SHOULD, do, is teach their history honestly. Today’s Japanese are not at fault for World War II and I don’t expect them to be saddled with guilt or shame about it. But they should know their true history, not have it whitewashed. They are being denied the truth, and this is something that today’s Japanese government should fix, as a way of showing that they recognize the evil of what came before them and are determined to ensure that it won’t be repeated.

Maybe Abe’s visit to Pearl Harbor will be a “teachable moment” for the people of Japan to learn some of their history. If so, this would be more than adequate justification for the visit. (Now, if we can only find some way to keep Obummer away from that sacred site.)

Was it a “dirty move” for the U.S. to send military support to the Chinese without declaring war against Japan?

I didn't expect to be defending historical foreign policy of the US on FR, but, no way was that dirty. Japan was an Imperialist power bent upon domination and conquest of foreign powers. It certainly was just and right for the US to support militarily the Chinese. Sure that was proxy fighting, but there's vast differences in scale and consequences to involvement.

When the US declared war that was far more significant to China and Japan's foreign policy that aid to a nation of peoples who were facing enslavement to the whims of Japan.

Most nations have done some pretty bad things at some point in history. It’s unhealthy for any country to be focused on apologizing constantly when the country has changed so much since the acts were committed. WW2 era Japan made the NAZI’s look good, but it’s not the same country anymore, and we have to move on. It wouldn't’t help anyone for them to apologize for their past. The only thing that kind of crap accomplishes is demoralizing the people, and weakening the country.

This is the kind of crap people like Obama are focused on when it comes to Japan instead of getting better trade deals, or making Japan pay their part for our military alliance. This article talks about how all these apologies would help our countries move on, even though the U.S. and Japan moved on a long time ago.

The US thoroughly destroyed the Imperial Japanese’s ability to wage war, executed Tojo and other war criminals and forced Japan to sign an unconditional surrender, the ultimate shame for their people. That’s enough for me.

I don’t think current people should be apologizing for past people. Let history be a guide and stop trying to rewrite it.
