25 Cities On The Brink Of Disaster: "Don't Be Here When Things Get Violent, Unsafe, & Fragile"

The 21st Century is inching ever closer towards chaos… and the time to get out of the big city is upon us.

With economic conditions, growing crises, desperate populations looking to scratch by, and more hatred and division than at any previous point in American history, the city has become a dangerous and unruly setting – and finding yourseld in one that is falling apart could be the worst mistake you ever make.

People are living in bigger urban zones than ever before… these megacities are the hotspots of global activity. But many are also proving to be the most dangerous place to be in a collapse. Crime is rampant, order is shaken and many people become willing to take advantage of the situation. Many areas are vulnerable to natural disasters, and have already lost control during past emergencies.

In other places, widespread unemployment is simply taking its toll through increases in theft and violence. Whatever the reason, there are many places where things are falling apart, badly.

As Wired reported, disaster is looming on a worldwide basis, but some are approaching total collapse, thanks to a storm of factors:

Using data on 2,100 cities, Robert Muggah has found which factors make an area more likely to become violent, unsafe and fragile. The data show 30 cities on the brink of disaster and what could cause it.

One power outage or EBT card ‘glitch’ from armageddon.
The deafening sounds of car alarms, screaming, breaking glass, and gunfire.

Good grief, what a downer. Difficult to read about the coming apocalypse everywhere. Amazing how bad things have gotten in the world when Liberals everywhere have been in charge of promoting utopia throughout the world. The whole thing is about to come crashing down. Think we need a strong leader who can steer the ship of this nation. Perhaps then other nations will use this leader as an example on how to manage properly and bring these financial and fiscal disasters to a screeching halt. That is if the same loser liberals let this leader succeed.

You know, this could be us, but evidently it's not. It could be the 1950's right here, for all you could tell ( sociology-wise. ) I keep waiting.

What gets lost in the discussion of the most pressing issues of the day is how quickly the world population is growing. Many believe that it will be slightly more than doubled by the year 2100 than it is today (7.3 billion).

The repercussions are already evident as forests shrink, animal species near ever closer to extinction, and the quality of human life worsens for many.

I’m no animal rights activist, tree-hugger or any other such zealot. But we do owe our existence and proliferation to the natural bounty and condition of this planet. We can continue to use up natural resources and pollute the air, land, and water, but we’re ultimately the one species which will pay the dearest.

There are ways to slow down our growth but nobody wants to open up that can of controversy for fear of their political and/or professional careers. Yet, conditions will arise to the point of making such methods a rash necessity. We’re humans. It’s our historic nature to put things off until we’re backed into a corner.

For what it’s worth, back in the 1980’s I researched and started to save my money for cryogenic preservation for possible re-animation in the deep distant future. I decided to get off that train about a decade ago because I don’t see a good future for our species.

That could arrive in the form of a natural catastrophe, but I’d put money on our demise as the result of our own selfish apathy. And if it does happen that way, then we certainly deserve it.

I’ve lived in big cities and small towns.

Now that I can live wherever I want...I live in a small town. By small I mean 600 people.

To each his own.

There are patches of rural small town order and civility holding out here and there, I have noticed that, my sister lives in such a place. Still have their parades and festivals, small downtown storefronts largely filled up and maintained. What is it? Religion? Civic mindedness? Just pure luck that their major employers haven’t shut down? It’s not a bedroom community, so it isn’t that either.

SIOUXSIE!!!

That song is in rotation every night while my daughter does her homework. Her favorite is Kiss Them For Me. Spellbound and Dazzle are up there too. She cues it up on YouTube and keeps it in the background while she works on her Accelerated Math problems. She is 9. Straight A’s usually. :)

Several states, like California, have over promised benefits to state employees in the pension programs, without ever planning to pay for them. If people lose it, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and the whole of the surrounding areas could simply erupt.

His treatise is overblown. Ain't happening. To compare California with 3rd-world crapholes like Haiti? So what if the California pension fund is going broke. That won't collapse the cities, which are economically healthy. Moreover, there is a lot of open land in California, from which the hordes in the cities could flee to for safety, food and water. Same goes for much of the west. Things can get bad, but not as bad as this guy says. People tend to forget that people went through the depression and rationing, and got through it. If war came to our shores, all bets are off. But no war, then times can get tough but the cities in the west will survive. To be fair, some things are getting worse, like overcrowding and traffic. It just means we'll be more like Tokyo (maybe not as civilized but that's due to the social mix).
