The Grotto
They've Improved it quite a bit,
It's got a marble floor.
You never can have too many lamps,
So it seems they've added more.
Rich drapery of Damask Silk
Trimmed skilfully with lace,
Surround the spot, marked by a star,
Where the Miracle took place.
But still, one has to go straight down,
Through an old door past the Nave,
Descend down many marble steps
To a damp and musty cave.
Although it no longer smells like sheep,
But like Frankincense and Myrrh,
We still see the humble place
Where The Miracle occurred.
The cameras all click and whir,
The Tour group presses on.
We've yet to see Jerusalem,
Tomorrow soon will dawn.
But I reach down and touch the Star,
That's bolted to the floor,
And know He's living in my heart,
And will, forevermore.

My all-time favorite piece of music.
Here is a true Christmas story from my own memory:
In 1984, things were tense in the Middle East, but not nearly as bad as today. One could still visit Hebron and Bethlehem without too much concern over terrorism, although it did exist.
The bus took us to Bethlehem, and waited outside as we toured the Church of the Nativity, the Grotto, The Cave of the Innocents, and St. Jerome’s Cave. Then it picked us all up (a busload of Pentecostal Pastors) and dropped us off at the Shepherds’ Fields, with strict orders to return to the bus by dark, or we would have to walk back to Bethlehem to catch the bus back to our Kibbutz/hotel.
Out in the field, someone produced a guitar with the question, “Anyone know any Christmas Songs?”
Well...I did. And we sang and sang and sang, every Christmas song ever written, and being Pentecostals, we started making up our own. There were shepherds in the field that night, and they grinned and nodded at us as the stars came out, one by one.
Yep...it was after dark. So we had a couple of miles to walk, back to the bus, in nearly total darkness, in a country at war.
It was “interesting” to say the least.
But we got the bus, and a loud Middle-Eastern scolding.
But I would not trade the experience for ANYTHING.

Oddly enough, in the Seventies, I dated — and almost married — a Jewish lady who was a chorister. Her all time favorite piece was “Messiah.”

Your commentary on this, my favorite Classical piece of music, to which I listen several times a week as I say my prayers and drop off to sleep, is wonderful.
Thank you, and Merry Christmas!

My dear late husband of 40 years was a Jewish man. Back in the 70’s this was still a very touchy subject.

I like this version.
Same notes...but “different”. As I mentioned before, I listen mostly to the Pinnock Version, but this one is really nice.
