Any endocrinologist may be asked to provide opposite-sex hormone treatment to a “transgender” patient. Any surgeon may be asked to perform a mastectomy on a “trans-man.” A cosmetic surgeon may be asked to perform surgery to make a man’s features look more “feminine.”
When I was five or six years old, I thought it would be really cool to be a grizzly bear. I growled like a bear and, insofar as possible, I dressed like a bear. If surgery had been available to transform me into a bear, I would have wanted it. I got over it a few months later, though.
