The Legendary A-10 (Warthog) Looks Like It's Here To Stay After Being Upgraded By The Air Force

In another positive sign for the beloved A-10, Air Force maintainers at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona have outfitted the Warthog with an upgrade for combat search and rescue missions (CSAR).

Dubbed the lightweight airborne recovery system, the upgrade helps A-10 pilots "communicate more effectively with individuals on the ground such as downed pilots, pararescuemen and joint terminal attack controllers," according to an Air Force statement.

Of all the fixed-wing aircraft in the US Air Force's inventory, no plane carries out CSAR missions like the A-10.

CSAR missions jump off with little warning and often involve going deep into enemy territory, so becoming certified to perform CSAR missions takes tons of training, which only A-10 pilots undergo.

The A-10's rugged survivability, massive forward firing power, newly acquired communication capabilities, and long loiter times at low altitudes make it ideal for flying low and slow and finding the lost person.

Exactly!

Just to show how hardy they are in battle, they survived eight years of Obama trying to shoot them down.

If you ever want the Air Force to keep the A-10, just hint that you are going to take them away and give them to the Army or Marines.

They used to build A-10s at the Fairchild-Republic plant
up in Hagerstown, MD. The factory runway used to parallel
I-70 and occasionally I used to be able to see one take off or land as I was driving by.

What a beautiful sight!

I had the opportunity to control an A-10 gun run during field artillery school at Fort Sill, OK 40 years ago. I can still remember seeing the devastating effects of the target hits and the inimitable BBUURRRPPPP from its 20mm? or 30mm? guns (long time ago).

An Arizona talk show host made this a favorite topic every week, inviting experts in and giving us the latest news as they happened. He is a Milwaukee native and he was on Hannity last night.

I give him a lot of credit for keeping our beloved Warthog rescue from extermination.

Don’t forget maintainable. Some of its control surfaces even interchange side to side to make service and replacement easier.

And if Haji is getting too close to the rescue subject the A10 jockey doesn’t have to call for support. The Warthog will lay scunion upon thy ass.

The AF could lower the cost and complexity, and increase performance of the F35 just by removing the CSAR requirement.

And start now to move the advanced avionics designed for the F35 over to other air platforms.

Much easier (though not easy) to multipurpose components of a plane rather than the entire airframe.

Let the A10 do what it does best, and let the F35 mature into a real fighter.

That’s great news. Now if we could get the airforce to build a top notch CAS drone, maybe something with a little stealth that would help out the ground troops.

Yes. No.

The tooling was deliberately destroyed, but we are not stupider and less capable than we were when the first A-10 flew.

They did it with the C-5, they can do it for the A-10 if need be.
