Trump Endorses Plan for 20% Tax on All Imports
New York Times ^ | JANUARY 26, 2017 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

PHILADELPHIA — President Trump plans to make Mexico pay for his border wall by imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports into the United States from Mexico, raising billions of dollars that would cover the cost of the new barrier.

The proposal, which Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, said the president discussed privately with congressional Republicans before giving remarks at a party retreat here, would be a major new economic proposal that could have far-reaching implications for consumers, manufacturers and relations between the two governments.

Mr. Spicer said the 20 percent tax on annual Mexican imports would raise $10 billion a year and would easily pay for a border wall that is estimated to cost between $8 billion and $20 billion. The value of imported goods from Mexico in 2015 was $296 billion. Mr. Spicer said taxing imports is something that 160 other countries already do.

The new tax would be imposed on Mexico as part of a tax overhaul that Mr. Trump intends to pursue with the Republican Congress. Mr. Spicer said the tax initially would apply only to Mexico, but that the president supports imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports.

This is a bad idea that will raise prices for American consumers. I hope Congressional Republicans oppose this.

A tax on imports will be paid by US consumers, not Mexico.

A 20% tax on imports from Mexico will not make Mexico pay for the wall. It will make Americans pay for it.

You continue to be far behind what Trump is doing and how he negotiates. He is eating Mexico’s breakfast. They will cave. Fast.

I’m stunned by how many people don’t get Trump yet. It’s not the same old useless politics

That said...I'm not in favor of tariffs.

This may be selective....and I will await to see the results....

Charles Krauthammer had it nailed the day after the election.

The voters have decided that going forward, we are going to live with a less efficient economy as the price for social peace.

Criticize that if you will, but the voters have spoken.

This is a great idea for AMERICAN JOBS and to punish these damned Mexicans who sent all their criminals to our country. We now have 76,000 illegal Mexican criminals in our FEDERAL penitentiaries. I hope we stave those bastards to death!! Shut them DOWN!!

I love it.
This is going to totally slow down the habit where US manufacturers continue to close factories here and send the plants and the jobs to Mexico. You want to avoid the 20 percent tax, keep your plants here.
Almost every country out there including China Japan and Mexico impose import taxes of one form or the other. Mexico has been getting away with murder.

ONLY for those consumers who insist on buying Mexican goods.

So you're you're siding with the globalist open borders at any price crowd because you need fruit and vegatables contaminated with bacteria de jour, cheap trinkets, badly assembled furniture, etc, etc, oh, and Corona Light?

Buy American.

No Mas!

If the products are more expensive, then most won’t buy Mexican products. Problem solved!

Do you not understand the nature of negotiating? Trump is going to make it so costly for Mexico to resist they’ll have no choice but to acquiesce.

...

Too bad we didn’t have a 100% tax on all that Chinese drywall that destroyed so many homes or the Chinese pet food that killed so many pets.

Yes, we will pay more for imports, but we get other benefits like better, higher paying jobs, a population less dependent on government, and lower income taxes.

>>A 20% tax on imports from Mexico will not make Mexico pay for the wall. It will make Americans pay for it.<<

Exactly right. We’ll see if Trump is just re-negotiating NAFTA here and eventually settles on a position that helps both countries, but in the meantime, he’s talking more and more like he’s all for a trade war.

And if the stock market starts worrying about an international trade war, watch out below.
