I rather doubt there would have been any hesitation. If somebody is in your sector under arms they get dropped until the objective is secured.

Yep, and they were also technically civilians.

Ospreys are notorious for being flying deathtraps. Mr. GG2 a former pilot said he wouldn’t get in one.

“Ospreys are notorious for being flying deathtraps.”

I was just cruising around FR and this sentence jumped out at me——and I thought it was a bird thread.

Needless to say I was a bit surprised.:-)

“investigation going on to determine how the Yemeni terrorists learned about the attack.”

Not disagreeing with you but,

I would think that on a stone cold moonless night, in the mountains, an Osprey hard landing (AKA crash) would have made a s*** ton of noise. The fact that the troops then had to traverse miles to get to the actual site, would have woke up everybody for miles and given them plenty of time to lie in wait and set up an ambush.
Element of surprise, for this Op, would’ve been paramount. I don’t see how it would/could have been possible to achieve under the circumstances.

"I’ve only ever seen one Osprey in flight and it was loud as heck, akin to a Chinook on its best day.

I’m guessing the Osprey was used due to the mission being beyond chopper range?"

I live under the flight path of Marine Corps Air Station New River. Osprey fly over my house all of the time. You are correct, they are as loud if not louder than regular helicopters. I am also certain that they have a "silenced version," but I don't know how quiet that is.

You are correct about the first version. But a lot of first generation planes are that way. The Corsair, of WWII fame, killed so many pilots (before they worked out the issues) that they were called "the widow maker."

The current version is well loved and very reliable. It has shown to be able to take a lot of hits and keep flying.

that scene was a BIG disappointment and should never been allowed in the movie since it never happened that way, per the book he did not shoot the boy

but the point is valid, a bomb thrower is a bomb thrower and should be dealt with accordingly

Even after upgrades there is the problem that although its possible to maintain autorotation if both engines fail in helicopter mode a safe landing is still difficult.

The sound depends on whether the Osprey is in hover or flight mode:

A flight of 10:

The SEALS would most likely have been inserted by Pave Low helos.

The Ospreys would have carried a Marine TRAP force and have landed some miles away at a remote LZ.

No counter measures for barking dogs. SEALS and DELTA have been warned for years about this, and keep tiptoeing in and having their cover blown. It was likely the TRAP force that caused all the damage.

BTW those were not Apaches, but Cobra Zulu helos.

That makes sense to me as the Osprey I heard was a couple of miles away making a landing approach with the rotors tilted at around 45 degrees.
