This may be a dilemma for the pro-Putin folks, but it's what most people have already known based on Putin's foreign policy. He chooses fellow dictatorships over democracies every time.

Lump them all together. Create another UAR so our enemies can be consolidated into one rat hole. That would make it sort of an EU. Next deport ALL Muslims living in western nations into that hell hole.

The current Russian and Iranian cooperation is an alliance of convenience only. Putin’s and the Mullah’s interests coincide in Syria, and Putin does not care how much trouble Iran causes in the Middle East or around the globe.
Putin’s only concern is any direct threat to Russia or his perceived interests.
In the short term this will work for him. But Iran (historic Persia) and Russia are longstanding rivals in the territories on both sides of the Caspian Sea. Once the Syrian Civil War ends, the Mullahs and Putin’s diverge significantly.
Putin wants and needs higher oil prices, Iran needs cash now, so they want lower prices to spur oil sales. Putin wants to dominate Azerbaijan and the Central Asian states. Iran has religious, ethnic, and historical ties with those countries that have improved since the USSR collapse.
If Iran begins to stir up trouble in the Caucuses or Central Asia, then Putin will have to rethink his tune.
I’d not forget, Putin has talked to the King of KSA; if the US dumped KSA, the Russians would be waiting, it is all geo-politics.
Russia also voted for the anti-Israel resolution in the UN.
All of those 911 hijackers except 1 were in Iran in the previous year.
We know General Soleimani and Iran are furthermore said to have killed American soldiers in Iraq.
Iraq may have survived better without the meddling of Iran.
