Not to take sides here, but choosing to home school your kids and then actually DOING it are two different things.

I think that homeschooling is not something that you do casually, but it is a commitment that is greater than what most people would suspect.

It’s possible that this woman was in over her head, and didn’t realize the enormity of what she had chosen to do.

I know people who have home schooled their kids...it isn’t something that was easy. There was lots of planning, and lessons and external testing, and, and....

The school district should be helping these parents, not trying to have them charged with neglect.

The schools have one interest only, and that is collecting their cut of funding.

Buffalo mother arrested after homeschooling children
This is insane!

It's light years beyond insane: it's Tyrannical and Criminal.

The state of New York should be sued immediately, and those who committed this outrage, under color of law, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible for their criminality!

This is the kind of criminal behavior which justifies a fierce backlash on the part of the parent, and the citizenry at large.

It's diabolical how such Tyranny is perpetrated under the guise of "protecting the children". It's unconscionable and absolutely despicable. In addition to criminal liability, the state should also be subject to maximum financial sanctions as well.

The state must demonstrate a compelling reason before ripping children away from their parent in this horrid manner. Such action should be considered only as a last resort.

Think of the trauma it puts the children through, not to mention the parents! To justify something like this for such a frivol

The response of the City is not surprising, however, as a parent, it behooves us to know the rules, laws, etc., and abide by them. If you have to notify the school, then make sure you do it. I’m not advocating the school’s position, and I applaud the parent for taking action in light of the failure of the school system and her challenging circumstance, but you have to make sure the “i’s” are dotted and “t’s” are crossed. There are organizations out there, local, state and national like HSLDA, that can assist parents through the process and even come to their defense in cases like these or when the school systems overstep their bounds (which they frequently do whether by acicident or not) and require actions that are not required in the law. We’ve homeschooled for over 20 years now and though we live in a homeschool “friendly” state, we are sure to know the rules, laws and requirements.

I looked at her Facebook page. I guess this happened several weeks ago. Said cops took her phone and are still harassing her. Had a PayPal account and looking for a lawyer.

There has to be more to this story. I used to be a CPS though not in NY so their regulations may be SOMEWHAT different. Kids can not be removed simply for school absence. The worker must have serious evidence and approval by the supervisor before just yanking them. The children MUST be in immediate danger. There are distinct levels of “Priorities” and school absence is at the very lowest of even maybe taking on the case much less removal from the home. The. Very. Lowest. My office wouldn’t have made it a case. That’s a job for the school and it’s truancy person.

Has there been a hearing? There must be a court hearing immediately and the children must also have attorney ad litem to represent their rights.

I suspect there is much more going on with the kids than is being reported. The house must be a disaster, no food in the fridge, no heat and mama’s bf is messing with the kids or worse. Outside a combination of all that, there is no reason to remove the kids. But then, this is lib NY so who knows.

In the picture, we can see foil on the window. That may or may not be an indication of the house but then lots of people have foil on windows for all sorts of reasons.

Facebook is evil. Do not use it. It WILL be used against you.

“Said cops took her phone and are still harassing her. Had a PayPal account and looking for a lawyer.”

One of the first steps to homeschool is to prepare legally. For us it was to join HSLDA. Our school did try some funny business, one call from HSLDA got us a quick apology.

I won’t claim it “should” be this way, but that is the reality and not being ready.... was their first mistake.

The worst stories are kept secret.

Because homeschool families have been and continue to be terrorized by CPS, _____, ______, I won’t even say.

It’s a team effort. Families won’t speak up for their own safety, generally. So the stories don’t get publicized.

NY CPS and adoption agencies are clinically insane and habitually tyrannical. We were on FT Hamilton and that is the ONLY thing which protected us from the wolves.

They said we could only foster white kids because black children had to remain in the culture they came from. SO I asked if that meant putting them into a foster home two blocks from where the abuse was taking place.

The looks I got were worth the price of admission.

For decades, Sandusky got his supply of “troubled” kids.

It’s a terrifying system of evil, from A to Z.

Kids for Cash. And it continues.

Did anyone listen to the end of her video? Wow.

I’m a homeschool mom. I sympathized with this woman... until I heard what she said at the end of the video.

Now I don’t care about her plight. I’d worry more about what she’s teaching her children at home. Yes, she has a right to teach her children what she believes, but she doesn’t have a right to anyone’s sympathy or help.

And, as someone else stated above, there’s probably more to this story, just like there was more to the story about the Hitler-loving parents who made headlines losing their children a few years ago.

Public schooling your child is changing from a privilege to a Soviet style dictate.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking too...
There a lot of knee-jerking going on in this thread...
We should get all the facts before freaking out...

“Said cops took her phone...”

Then they must have been doing something on video that they’re ashamed of. Sad that some cops are such criminals that they’re more afraid of a law-abiding citizen with a camera than they are of a criminal with a gun.

[[It’s possible that this woman was in over her head, and didn’t realize the enormity of what she had chosen to do.]]

The article states that Buffalo City hall didn’t send the paperwork to the school- the school had her investigated for her children’s ‘excessive absence’, and she was therefore charged with ‘child neglect’ - this wasn’t about anything other than that- it sounds like the woman was committed enough to jump through all the hoops to get it done legally- doesn’t sound like a slacker to me- but again it’s about the school being buttheads

the school should be sued for causing emotional damage to young vulnerable children- and for pain and suffering for this mother- and for kidnapping-

if it turns out the woman did nothing wrong of course- there may be more to the story- but the article makes it appear that her kids were taken because the city hall didn’t inform the school-

Move to Alabama, or North Carolina, or any one of several dozen states where homeschooling is not only legal, but where an active and supportive homeschooling scene exists. Noo Yawk is full of insurrection to the Constitution of the United States.
