“Who was on the winning side of the transaction?”

You’ve stated the most important question about this story, given the financial tricks of both sides of this family.

Cui bono? Who and/or what institutional investors or what non-profits or blind trusts or offshore investors benefited from the dive(s) in price of this fund?

“Who was on the winning side of the transaction?”

My impression was he was betting on a short term turnaround with temporarily the value going from (for example) $0.10 of the dollar to $0.12 on the dollar. How much of his betting was based on inside information, who knows? If it was, either it was bad information or somebody else had better inside information. Bottom line, you don’t want to play in a rigged game.
