I wonder if the University will offer a special degree program for these long overlooked poor students: a Bachelors of GimmeDat.
49 years ago, I attended and graduated from what was then primarily a commuter college near St Louis. I vividly remember parking out in the hinterlands and hoping not to freeze to death walking to the campus during the miserable winters. As I finally reached the main loop, resembling Omar Sharif in Dr Zhivago, busloads of “students of color” would arrive from East St Louis, and make the short walk to the Student Union, where they would spend most of the day. Later in the day, as I was digging out my car to go home, these same “students” would wave as they drove by on their way home.
It’s amazing what stays with you after all these years.
