WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s pick to run Medicare and Medicaid won confirmation Monday from a divided Senate as lawmakers braced for another epic battle over the government’s role in health care and society’s responsibility toward the vulnerable.

Indiana health care consultant Seema Verma, a protégé of Vice President Mike Pence, was approved by a 55-43 vote, largely along party lines. She’ll head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a $1 trillion agency that oversees health insurance programs for more than 130 million people, from elderly nursing home residents to newborns. It’s part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Oh great another Pence pick. He needs to be in the background like other mediocre VP picks.

It’s ridiculous that this vote was along party lines. Seema is a star whose innovations in Indiana’s Medicaid system were recognized and adopted by many other states.

A party-line vote? But she’s a minority - how dare Dems not support her

Can’t get 60 votes for anything in the Senate. Use Rule 19 and keep them there for two or 3 days to get your votes through

“He”?

Yeah. Is gender disappearing from language altogether?

...Seema Verma, a protégé of Vice President Mike Pence....

Should be, "a protégée of Vice President Mike Pence", etc.

Where's the "diversity" if everybody is the same thing?

Here’s a radio interview with Sam Clovis this AM, where he said he thought the admin would go through two stages of budget prep before submission to Congress: the current one looking for cuts and savings in the discretionary budget—and then another one looking at the rest of the budget. He also said he thought there would be real cuts in every department except for Defense and the VA.

Alexander Acosta, Robert Lighthizer and Sonny Perdue are the last three appointees who still need conformation.

Whatever happened to those Democrat calls for “bipartisanship”, and “working together to get things done?”

OP referring to Pence.

Yeah. But in that case, the sentence would need to be rewritten.

He needs to be in the background like other mediocre VP picks.

Depends here if the commenter means to say the "VP picks" are mediocre, or if the VP himself is mediocre, and in that case, he might have left a letter out of the last word. (Just guessing here.) ;-)

But for myself, I stand firm on "protegé/protegée". That one was FTA. The "pick" in the article is clearly attributed to Pres. Trump, not VP Pence.

Well, to a DemocRAT, “bipartisanship”, and “working together to get things done" means "Republicans do everything we like and capitulate to all of our demands".
