Turkey has been crowned the champion of Twitter bans as more and more accounts are being flagged up for security reasons, a report released by the social media giant shows.
Twitters transparency report announced that Turkey topped the list of countries that requested account closures, with Twitter closing 3,076 accounts in the last six months alone at Turkeys request.
Of these, 2,232 cases were requested by the government, police and other state institutions, and 844 were requested by the courts. A total of 8,417 tweets were also reported by Turkey, with Twitter closing 290 accounts and deleting 489 tweets.
According to Twitters report, a total of 13,022 accounts were flagged up by governments around the world with a record surge in requests by Turkey emphasised in the report.
Turkeys 3,076 bans is followed by 1,334 by France, 522 by Russia, 236 by Germany 176 by Indonesia, 102 by the USA, 97 by India, 82 by Japan and 66 by the UK.
