Don't hear a lot from that crowd any more. Think they're all dead? Hope they didn't take too many innocent bystanders with 'em....
There have been cases of CHP responding quickly to on scene collisions and they’ll find one of the parties deceased and an active cell phone at the scene with people on the other end still speaking, asking, “What was the noise, are you there, what happened Susie, Susie are you there”?
Texting laws by state:

..relatively slaps on the hand, not major punishments
Others, here, speculated that, too.
What a needless waste of 14 lives.
Amen. Prayers up for these families who have lost their loved ones.
I am so sorry.

Not surprised.
So eery....I’ve read where LEO’s have said it is as bad, or WORSE, than DUI. Same laws should apply.
True, though ignoring tickets eventually loses you the license as well.
“Time for immediate implementation in ALL vehicles to disable all phone functions when the motor starts.”
I’m the chief operator of a public utily. I’m always on call. If the problem can be handled by phone, I pull over. If not, I simply say “I’m on my way” and hang up. What about doctors, etc?
It really is terrifying; I’ve done stupid things when I was younger but wouldn’t have had the “courage” to even attempt this.
Ping.
An act of kindness on Mr. Kuchler's part and he will forever be haunted by the nightmare.........
What to do about smart phones, texting and all that crap is best left for another thread.........
10 years ago when I saw someone swerving all over the road, I thought “drunk”.
These days I think “phone”.
They swerve all over while walking and using the phone too.
I wonder if the folks who called in to the cops mentioned the driver was texting? And how long it took LE to respond to the calls.
I agree with you so there are two of us.
About 18 years ago the wife of a co-worker of mine was in a head on. The women in the other vehicle had turned around and reached back to separate her two kid who were fighting in the back seat. She was driving at about 55 on a winding two lane country road. She crossed the line and ran into my co-worker's wife's car.
She did not have a scratch. The wife was in a comma for months, ended up with brain damage and is now disabled.
The woman who caused the accident just could not understand why people would blame her.
You have one job when you are behind the wheel. Just one. Drive the car. Nothing else.
If you are doing anything else and cause an accident then you get hit for reckless driving. If you have taken anything that would make you a less competent driver you are charged with reckless driving.
No need for new laws, just enforce the ones we have.
Most of those younger folks who saw it, never forgot it. Of course PC told us it was offending and scaring the snowflakes so that was done away with too.
If I had it my way, every single person who is given a drivers license would be made to watch the entire series of films Red Assault I, III and III videos.
For every "ease" you can come up with, I can come up with 10 accidents that were caused by "smart phone ease".
You want one in your car, like I have, I have no problem with it. Just keep yours turned off like mine is...........
As far as your claim about "GPS", there's not a destination you may wish to visit that can't be accessed via a local map or a print out from map quest on your home computer.............That's the ONLY way I get directions to wherever I am going where I have never been before........
I'd rather my doctor (or anyone else) be a minute or two later than not get here at all. And, lessen the chance that my doctor killed a dozen bus passengers on his way to me.
Ever see the first part of the movie "Dr. Strange"?
When the phone beeps emergency, pull over.
The life you save may be your own.
Good idea! No doubt countless lives were saved by those films. PC can’t have that, nowadays :(
Using a phone while driving costs the driver $500 in fines.

Florida doesn’t even have any cell phone laws. Police can’t even pull you over for texting.
