There’s a reason Dr. Fail is in family practice. It’s amperage, not voltage that makes current dangerous. 50K volts from a taser seldom kills, but 100 amps from a 12 volt battery charger is very lethal.

What’s the difference between lethal and very lethal?

The stupid media (but I repeat myself) could do the public a service by emphasizing that it was:
  1. THE EXTENSION CORD, and
  2. THE DOG TAGS
that caused the short and the shock.

BUT NO-O-O-O-OO, they have to say it was the EVIL PHONE and EVIL CHARGER. I'm actually astonished that they didn't say "iPhone" or "Apple" in the headline itself.

Dumbasses, all of them. They miss every opportunity to be correct/accurate, or to do the right thing.

I'm glad the guy didn't die, but he sure was working hard for it.

With the exception, an 80 amp car battery won’t kill you. But 15 amps delivered on a 115 volt line can — well, you’ll at least get tickled.

Regarding the picture of the wall outlet with lots of extensions and adapters:

A couple decades ago I remodeled my younger teenage daughter’s bedroom. She had a bunch of devices plugged into the wall below her window like that picture. Since I had pulled the sheetrock off a couple walls, I installed half a dozen outlets spread along two walls with heavy gauge wire, with a large outlet box below the window that can handle 6 plugs. After the remodel, what does she do? She plugs everything in that one window outlet box and nothing in the other 5 outlet boxes, with a bunch of adapters and extension cords. Oh well, I tried.

If people have that many devices to plug in, I recommend a UPS box, much better than an extension outlet strip.

We did some remodeling a couple years ago which included upgrading the electrical service to the house, adding, some, new circuits, adding outlets (1952 house doesn’t have many). In the LR I went to dual-gang outlets because I got so sick of having to find adapters, plug and unplug things, find extension cords, etc. I should of done this years ago...plenty of outlets. Love it!

Simple. . . With "lethal," you feel it before it kills you. With "very lethal," you don't even notice you're dead, before you're dead! See?

Same here, added dual-gang outlets in multiple locations. Cutting out sheetrock and replacing a single-gang with a dual-gang is not difficult. Cut a rectangle lining up with the vertical stud centers on both sides, replace the outlet box, then screw back the rectangle of sheetrock back in place with sheetrock screws. Covering up the cracks is a skill, but not that difficult. Tape and wallboard compound, then primer and finish paint.

OWC sells dual-outlets with USB ports built-in, they only use power when a USB plug is inserted. I’ve installed these. I notice that stores like Home Depot and Lowes are selling similar devices that have USB ports but I don’t know if they are using power constantly or are like the OWC ports. Doing this does away with vampire bricks for cell phones etc. that always drain power. Install two in a dual-outlet box and have four USB ports handy.

Practical advice

Only buy low gauge extension cords

They are pricey though

I love it. Kind of like the meaning of is. It may be enough or it is very likely to be enough. I think I’ve been down here too long.

Exactly - how man of us survived a childhood that included sticking a metal object into the household outlet?

And this is why the nany state will have us install ONLY childproof outlets and expensive arc fault breakers.
