Officials said an intruder was shot by a homeowner during an apparent home invasion Monday evening.

Authorities said crews were called just after 9 p.m. to the 400 block of Marshall Avenue in Pittsburgh's Perry South neighborhood.

Channel 11's Steven Fisher reported that the 51-year-old resident heard someone rummaging around the first floor of his home.

He grabbed his gun and confronted the intruder, who police identified as 56-year-old Darrell Bettis.

Police said Bettis charged at the man and struck him with a crowbar. After a struggle, police said the homeowner shot Bettis in the upper right thigh.

Bettis was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in stable condition.

Police said Bettis will be charged with aggravated assault, burglary and criminal mischief.

Don't bring a crowbar to a gunfight!

Another indication that crime in the city is skyrocketing under Mayor Skippy McCloset Bikepath.

Shot him in the leg?
That will not do. Always go for the kill shot. Nobody will sue you.
It’s always easier to defend your actions against a corpse than a cripple.

This is why you shoot first when there is an intruder in your home. Although he had a gun when he confronted the guy, the guy was able to rush him and hit him with a crowbar. He could easily have lost that fight, and his life, even though he was better armed.

My thoughts as well. Bet he:
1) was out on parole
2) plea-bargained his previous charge down to a lesser term
3) has a record as long as your arm
4) all of the above

Our judicial system today consistently recycles these criminals back into Society until someone does their job for them and eliminates the problem. This homeowner failed, but maybe the next one . . .

You can bet that Mayor Peduto’s “racially sensitive” policing theories played a part in this as well.

He should have spent more time at the range with his trainer hitting him with a crowbar.

It looks like all the gun sales Obama encouraged are bearing fruit.

Exactly. A double-tap fixes lots of personnel problems.

Tueller Drill: Inside 21 feet, pistol v. knife, the one with the pistol is going to get severely injured. The one with the knife may die too, but at that range it’s time to “stop the threat” if there is an immediate danger.

Yup. I bet very few of us have heard of Dennis Tueller. Except for close combat drills, most of our range drills are at 21 feet and greater.

Not knowing can be unfortunate on either side. As the one with the gun, it could be fatal. As the one with "just a knife", it could lead to giving up in a situation that is not hopeless.

I don't claim to be great at close combat, but I can at least hit a target at 25 feet in just under one second (not the crazy fast 0.15 to 0.25 times of competition), and I know the numbers on various encounters. The hard part is deciding to shoot in time, which pretty much means before you're being charged. If someone is in your home, uninvited, you are already in immediate danger - not that it should be phrased that way when your lawyer is explaining what happened to the police.
