Barack Obama to visit Edinburgh for charity fundraiser

Former US president Barack Obama is to make his first visit to Scotland when he addresses business leaders in the capital next month.

He will also answer questions from the audience at the event, which is being held to raise money for charity.

The charity was set up by leading businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter.

Tickets for a table of 10 at the dinner are expected to go on sale for approximately £5,000.

The Hunter Foundation has previously arranged for US politicians and actors including Bill Clinton, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney to come to Scotland.

All of the cash raised will be split between children's charities in Scotland and the Obama Foundation, set up by the former president and his wife Michelle.

I liked Scotland too, much better than our visit to Ireland. The Highlands are beautiful, and we got to the Isle of Skye. There are so many small islands in the inner and outer Hebrides, and I wish I could have seen more of them.

I enjoyed the Highlands tour that I went on. It was one of those bus tours that loops up from Edinburgh to Inverness, then back. I was seated up front, right next to the tour guide - a burly Scot who would direct the driver (an Italian guy with tinted glasses like Bono) to pull over for various photo opportunities.

At one such stop, the tour guide pointed out a distant castle and asked if anyone recognized it. I said "Aye... it's a perilous place that has a Grail-shaped beacon!"

That ignited a few minutes of "Face the Peril" banter aboard the bus. :-)

I'd love to do one of the rail tours of the Highlands. Edinburgh is a place I'd like to see again, too - much more so than London.
