Trump nominates physician for Army secretary post

President Trump selected Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green for Army secretary after his initial pick backed out two months ago, the White House announced Friday evening.

Green was rumored in mid-March to be the leading candidate for the military post. If selected, the gubernatorial candidate would have to put his state political ambitions on hold, though the payout, for a much bigger position on the federal level, would be an upgrade even from governor.

The 52-year-old physician has served three tours overseas and later created AlignMD, an emergency room management firm. He joined the state Senate in early 2013 and also serves as chaplain of the Senate GOP Caucus.

As an Army physician, Green was part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which took him on three tours to the Middle East.

Green and Vincent Viola, Trump's previous nomination, both graduated from West Point. Viola withdrew his name for the position on March 2, citing an inability to separate his private financial investments from his work as a government official.

Military career
Green graduated from U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1986. From 1987 through 1990, Green served as an infantry officer in the United States Army. His first duty assignment following graduation from the US Army Ranger School was with the 194th Armored Brigade (United States) at Fort Knox. There he served as a rifle platoon leader, scout platoon leader and battalion adjutant for an Infantry Battalion. Following the Infantry Officer’s Advance Course, then Captain Green served with the famed 82nd Airborne Division as an airborne battalion supply officer and a rifle company commander. Following a traumatic event where his father’s life was saved by a team of surgeons and critical care doctors, Green requested the US Army send him to medical school. He attended Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He did his residency in emergency medicine at Fort Hood Texas. After his residency Dr. Green was selected to serve as the Flight surgeon for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

Green decided to become a doctor after his father spent 45 days in an intensive care unit. He obtained his medical degree from the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in 1999. He completed his residency in emergency medicine in 2002. He then served as a special operations flight surgeon in the United States Army, including tours of duty in the Afghanistan War and Iraq War. He was the special operations flight surgeon during Operation Red Dawn, the military operation that captured Saddam Hussein. Green sat with Hussein for the first 24 hours of his capture, and interrogated him for six hours. Following his military service, he authored a book, titled A Night With Saddam, detailing the capture of Hussein and the medical care Green administered.

Green left the military in 2006. For his service, Green was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Achievement Medal, the Air Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge among numerous other awards. He also earned the Air Assault Badge and the Flight Surgeon Badge during his military service.

I was saying to myself “why a physician for Army Secretary?”...until I saw West Point.

Now get cross dressers out of the army and women out of front line combat units. Concentrate on war fighting and not social experiments.

Crap! He was a candidate for next year’s governor’s race and excited a lot of us. It would have been great to have a real Conservative governing our state.

He was torn between running for governor and accepting this position, and we can’t fault him for accepting. But it sure is a disappointment. Figured it was coming when he cancelled his speaking engagement I’d planned to attend tomorrow.

He has my congrats.
