Syria unable to repel US air strike at Shayrat airbase — Russian expert
TASS ^ | April 8, 2017

Posted on 04/07/2017 7:06:33 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. Syrian Army could not repel the U.S. missile strike at the Shayrat airbase in the early hours of Friday, as the Syrian air defense system covers separate facilities and, quite possibly, the Syrians did not have air defense missile systems around that base, Igor Korotchenko, the editor-in-chief of the Moscow-based National Defense magazine told TASS.

"In the first place, the Syrians have island-like air defenses," he said. "This means that the units and weaponry systems cover separate facilities. They don’t have an integrated air defense net and I don’t rule out there were no air defenses around that base at all."

"Secondly, apart from Pantsyr (a surface-to-air and antitank missile system TASS) all other systems are outdated because they were manufactured back during the Soviet era and they stand in need of upgrading," Korotchenko said. "That’s why the Syrians couldn’t rebuff the strike meaningfully."

Murakhovsky said on his part the Pentagon had warned the Russian side about the forthcoming strike. "Our commanders at Hmeymim (airbase) received a notification two hours prior to the strike that is was coming up because the Americans had the apprehensions that Russian servicemen might turn out on the Shayrat base. . .

Sounds like bs. Didn’t the Israelis hit a base a couple of years ago and it was billed as amazing we/they got through the latest Russian surface to air system?

Regardless of one being for or against, I still find it odd to warn parties that you are attacking them :)

Seems inherent in the word “attack” that you wouldn’t want them to know.

I know, it was to make sure Russians weren’t killed

Still strikes me as funny every time we do that :)

It does seem a bit odd, but two hours notice just gives the recipient enough time to bend over and kiss their a$$ goodbye.

No, it gives everyone there a chance to get out of harm’s way.

How many died?

How many russians died?

How many would have without a warning?

We weren’t attacking the Russians we were attacking the Syrian chemical weapons store.

Besides, as much as I dislike liberal NYC I’m not ready to lose it to a nuclear strike. We do NOT want to go to war with Russia over some podunk country like Syria

You simply refuse to admit that those who are “in the know” acted in the “best interest” of all parties involved from the viewpoint of the “powers that be”, whether you LIKE it or not.

I’m not happy with it, but I ‘understand’ it.

Reality bites. Comprehend it, or protest it. Your choice.

This incident has also made me wonder whether the much praised Russian missile defense system is really rather worthless. What is it called, the S-300 or some such thing? I was under the impression they could have stopped this attack.

Imagine being a Syrian pilot, being told at 4am to get your *ss out to the airfield to move your bird. Well, I would think the typical response might be “With cruise missiles on the way?? YOU DO IT!” LOL

"word was 1/2 of missiles were shot down"

Facts are that ALL 57 that launched properly precisely hit their targets. Two that failed to launch properly were replaced, and they hit their target, too.

Haha! Yeah but first you gotta get the fuel truck drivers outta the rack, fuel the fuel truck, then fuel the airplane, get the lineman to drag the huffer to the airplane (hoping the huffer is fueled) and get it started. Start the airplane and head for the taxiway with all the rest of squadron pilots just in time for 59 1000 pound warheads arriving in station simultaneously. Since your strapped into your jet you can’t get out of it fast enough to kiss your a$$ goodbye. Just sayin’

Cruise missiles are harder to stop than aircraft.

I think we should put Putin in his place. I’m starting to get a blue vein throbber just thinking about it.

They were the only adults in the room. They decided it would be best if the USA and Russia didn’t enter a shooting war. So they ducked our nutty neocon cruise missiles and hoped for the best.

That would be great if we hadn’t been at war for 16 years, had 8 years of sequestration and Michelle using DOD funds to pay for her healthy eating for illegals plan. I just want the XXXX terrorists wiped out.

There are NO good guys in that country

If Assad didn't want this treatment, he shouldn't have ‘gassed’ his people and not the first time this has happened...

The people want to go back to their country, but can't as long as this manic is in power...he should be removed and while we are at it, we should take out the ‘little fat boy’ from North Korea...

I will stand behind President Trump all the way, if this is what he wants to do...at least someone cares about the way the people are being treated in these two countries...

I wonder what would happen to us, if we had a ‘dictator’ running our country, we almost did by the name of Hillary, but people are blinded that things didn't go the way they should have in their own little ‘bubbles’ so they start acting like they are ‘in the know’...we don't know anymore as to why President Trump did what he did than anyone else except the Generals and people that have the information that we are not selected to knowing...that's why our Country is as free as it is...so just hope that if someday your picking garbage off the streets to eat, without a roof over your head and being able to stay warm when it's cold, that someone will take the time to make a difference...but like the ‘snowflakes’ of this Country, you have to experience it before you know how it is to be a ‘captive’ in your own country...

That word didn’t seem to disrupt one a second for 60 seconds on the target area.

I’m not so sure. I think our best bet is to have the Saudis, the Egyptians and the Jordanians flip a coin to see who gets Syria and then back them from our armchairs. We have done an incredible amount of damage for a people who just wanted to do the right thing
