US ready 'to do more in Syria' after strike

The US ambassador to the UN has said America is 'prepared to do more' militarily in Syria but hopes it will not be necessary.

Speaking at a bad-tempered emergency UN Security Council meeting, Nikki Haley said Syrian President Bashar al Assad felt he could get away with using chemical weapons against his own people 'because he knew Russia would have his back'.

'That changed last night,' she said, referring to US cruise missile strikes on a Syrian government airbase in retaliation for a poison gas attack allegedly by Assad's regime which killed 80 people, including children.

Well isn’t that just peachy? As if the US didn’t have enough wars in Afghanistan,Iraq, Yemen and Libya the supreme strategic genius is now adding Syria.

Is North Korea next week?

I wonder if he’ll ever get around to building that wall?

One missile strike is not a war.

And, yes, stopping the use of chemical weapons from being used in a nation where we have troops combating ISIS is a legitimate reason to take a military action.

Were you one of those Never Trump jackasses?

If NK ends up with nuclear weapons, you don't think we should take theme out? Are completely nuts?

I didn’t see any insults in his comment.

Are you that insecure about your position? :)

Doing more at times would probably be a better way to go than letting North Korea, Iran and Syria proceed with their nuke buildup. They would be the tools to start an exchange with their big sisters following on.

Syria’s got a nuke buildup? :)

In what mythical land is that.

and it’s been a LONG time since we’ve fought anybody that could actually do large scale damage to us or an ally.

We go for fifth world countries :)

So are we fighting Assad, ISIS or McCain’s “moderates” :)

Or does it change from day to day or hour to hour :)

I know. We could fight for AND against all three.

This we have to win :)

plenty outside US who couldn’t vote, but still supported Trump, would agee with Farage...and with Nuttall’s “I hoped for better”.

7 Apr: Daily Mail: Farage criticises Trump for launching strikes on Syria as UKIP leader Paul Nuttall describes the attack as ‘trigger happy and nonsensical’
“I am very surprised by this. I think a lot of Trump voters will be waking up this morning and scratching their heads and saying, ‘where will it all end?’” he said.
“As a firm Trump supporter, I say, yes, the pictures were horrible, but I’m surprised. Whatever Assad’s sins, he is secular.”...
Meanwhile, Ukip leader Paul Nuttall condemned the missile strikes on an Assad airfield as ‘rash, trigger happy, and nonsensical’.
TWEET: Paul Nuttall: The U.S. bombing of Syria last night was rash, trigger happy, nonsensical and will achieve nothing. I hoped for better...

Well, what’s done is done.

And if you speak to the average idiot, er, American, even some of my kin, they were SHOCKED, SHOCKED at the sight of dead kids from sarin gas.

Cause no other kids have died the past six years in just as horrific ways at the hands of ISIS.

It’s done. Maybe some other countries will think “this guy’s nuts” and that will be good.

MAGA is still WAY on track. We just disagree with this action.

Now we just have to hope that Russian/American jets don’t shoot each other down now that Russia cut communications.

where we have troops combating ISIS

With all due respect, I am confused...

These are the facts as I understand them:

1. Assad is combating ISIS,Al-Qaeda & others
2. Assad is being backed by Iran/Russia
3. Iran is Shia Muslims
4. ISIS & other groups (Al-Qaeda, etc.) are combating Assad
5. ISIS et al are Sunni Muslim
6. We are helping the rebels
7. Rebels are ISIS/Al-Qaeda
8. We are helping ISIS

So how are we helping ISIS and combating ISIS at same time?

Thank you for posting this...

Seems some here want to squelch any questioning or debate of Trump policies, and the number one method seems to be attack the poster—just like the good old days when Trump supporters were attacked relentlessly by Cruz supporters until Jim laid down the law ;)

Disagree with a position, but it is really bad form to attack someone just because they disagree.

It is not so cut and dry. There are 3 or 4 sides to the Syrian civil war. The 3 main parties are Assad, ISIS, and the revolutionary rebels. ISIS is not allied with the rebellion, they want to start their caliphate and used the conflict as cover to establish a territory in which to operate. They do threaten Assad, but do not support the rebels nor do the rebels support ISIS..

The rebels are backed by the US, Saudi, Gulf states, the EU, Jordan and Turkey but only in a limited fashion (if we really backed them they would have depose Assad quickly, but now Russia supports Assad so there is a sort of stalemate to avoid direct conflict each side jockeys for leverage and Trump just grabbed some of it, whereas Russia previously had the upper hand by embarrassing us thanks to Obamas and Hillary’s neglect). The rebels want to replace of Assad and if they do, they will use the Syrian Armed forces to fight ISIS as interlopers squatting on Syrian land. Which is what they are.

Assad is not really fighting ISIS right now though, he has bigger problems and they serve as a sort of red herring, a threat and distraction to all other parties in the conflict. Russia backs Assad but also uses as pretext “the war on terror” claiming they are there to fight ISIS but that is not really their purpose that is just PR.

Each side has their own agenda and though in theory you could say both the rebels and ISIS are against Assad and vice versa, the rebels are not aligned with ISIS. But the opposite is also true - the rebels are fighting Assad but would fight ISIS too, and Assad opposes ISIS but is busy fighting the rebels. ISIS is happy to get away with what they have because no one side has chosen to take decisive action, and they also terrorize Syria and the rebels when their interests are threatened eg taking over large areas and holding the civilians hostage or driving them out as refugees.

To be clear I am not saying it was right for us to move on Syria. But after Qaddafi, and Mubarak, and Yemen, the Obama Clinton team put a fright into Assad. Obama loud mouthed about red lines and regime change but then waffled and wobbled back and forth. Obama and Clinton essentially forced Assads hand to invite Russia in as protection, and it happened right under their noses. Those two screwed up 40 years in which Russia was frozen out any warm water port (except for one small base they had access to in Syria but it was too small to support a fleet) and frozen out of the mideast which Carter won after flipping Egypt at Camp David. Now thanks to Obama Clinton there is an axis from Tehran to Damascus to Moscow... It is no wonder Turkey is acting up they are in a prime spot with NATO defense pact in their pocket they can play bully in the eastern med and also keep Russia in tow, as Russia would love to flip Turkey... And throw NATO into turmoil..

I was just kidding man.

I don’t even know what the hell my position is.

I was furious the first 24 hours, now I’m trying to absorb everything that’s happened.

I’m not a NeverTrumper because I disagree with something he did.

We’d all be NeverWifers, NeverFrienders, NeverFamiliers if one disagreement was all it took.

He’s about 100 and 2 in my book.

I just hate seeing FReepers denigrate each other, including when i do it!

Have a great weekend man.

Go Trump. I DO hope this thing ends here and there is no more reason to hit Assad.

If it sent a message to the right people, great

Where have I heard this story before? Change Assad to sadam and Syria to Iraq. Look how many American lives and how much American taxpayer dollars were wasted. It appears to be a set up to draw us in..
Over a darned Syrian gas pipeline that has been in the works for years.
I just don’t support it, without more information.
