Vladimir Putin will meet Rex Tillerson, the US secretary of state, on Wednesday amid a deepening confrontation over Russia’s role in Syria and a US missile strike against a government-controlled airbase there.

Mr Tillerson arrived in Moscow on Tuesday evening for talks with Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, which are expected to focus on US calls for the Kremlin to drop its support for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

The Kremlin has refused to confirm whether there are plans for Mr Putin to meet Mr Tillerson in line with its policy of not announcing such meetings before they happen....

Yeah. He’s gonna walk away from Assad. He doesn’t want sea access anymore anyway and he would like a US friendly regime right at his doorstep.

Let me know what the name of the pot you’re buying is :)

From what I’ve read Putin has an Assad successor lined up. He won’t be US friendly but it lets the US save face as Syrian finishes off the US supported rebels.

"Yeah. He’s gonna walk away from Assad. He doesn’t want sea access anymore anyway and he would like a US friendly regime right at his doorstep."

That's obviously not going to happen, but we have mutual interests in Syria. We need a stable country that is not a breeding ground for terrorist and get rid of the current terrorist groups there (ISIS and Al Nusra). Does it have to be Assad that is the leader of Syria? Why can't Syria have another Alawite pro Russia leader who is not going to kill all of his own people and can keep the crazies at bay? I'm sure that Russia knows all of the top leaders in Syria and knows which one could lead it. I'm sure there is some nice cozy mansion on the shores of the Black Sea that Russia could persuade Assad to live out his days at in relative luxury. These are the things that Tillerson should be talking to them about IMO.

It is common sense for Vlad to meet with Rex. They’ll have to discuss Syria sooner or later, anyway.

The media just wants to make sure they get it right. The media is very flexible.

Oil and gas is the biggest sector of the Russian economy and Tillerson has been running the worlds largest oil and gas company, I’d love to be a mouse in the corner at that meeting as the discussion will not only be about gas of the nerve type.

Dude you just got done lying about the Syrian government not fighting ISIS that I destroyed you on by showing that not only had the Syrian government tried fighting an ISIS but they lost a lot of troops doing so. You’ve got about as much credibility is a priest in a whorehouse.

Oh, is it the Russians and assad that surround Raqqa? Is it putin’s air force pounding Raqqa? No, so all you have is insult that are cliches. No sting, just sour grapes on your part over the POTUS teaching putin and assad a lesson.

They will meet briefly and in private. Putin will be all bluster and threats but he will give a private hand written note to Trump (yes, he reads and writes English). The new Trump world will continue and Putin is going to jump on board the Trump Train. My Bet—Assad is going to have an accident soon. His plane will fall out of the sky—Make Russia look bad you become accident prone. A new dictator will take over and make a deal with the Rebels—the Civil War will be over in two months. Next step—change leaders in North Korea—work out a new treaty to ensure trade between North and South. Get rid of Nuke program and rocket research scaled back. Next, Trump can fix Cuba with Free Elections. New elections in Ukraine where a pro-Russia party wins and reestablish a peaceful relationship between the two lands. Its possible.

Assad and his family are the deal breakers for a great many groups who do not object to the Alawites. There are many groups in Syria that would stop fighting the regime, if Assad goes.

A post-Assad Baathist style government might be able to cobble together enough support to function. The Russians want their naval base, and may be willing to they may act as an honest broker between factions. The US led coalition can do the dirty work and destroy ISIS in Syria.

It wont be easy, but it would be a potential compromise that allows everyone to save face and get a partial win.

Did you miss the part where Assad tried to retake Raqqa and lots time of men against advanced American weapons that ISIS was using? Stop lying about Assad not fighting ISIS.

Good.

If there is one thing history has taught us, it is that the Soviet people respect strength. The repeated humiliations we endured under feckless weaklings like Obama and Bush will not be happening anymore. And I can assure you, relations will be healthier as a result
