Years ago, a neighbor of mine had a similar tragedy. He left his home to make a quick trip to the store. He ended up backing right over his young son who was evidently playing with toy cars right behind his pickup in the driveway.

It's easy to judge these kind of things but tragic accidents do happen to the best of us. He was not drunk or anything. He just didn't look behind his truck and his son did not realize that the starting engine meant imminent danger to himself.

That was 20 years ago. The neighbor was devastated and he and his wife quickly put the house up for sale and moved out of state. Hope they are doing well.

The teenage son of Christian music star Stephen Curtis Chapman backed over his little sister & killed her. Chapman wrote a couple of songs about her.

He just didn't look behind his truck and his son did not realize that the starting engine meant imminent danger to himself.

In many of these cases, people actually are looking behind, ahead, or whatever; the small child just happens to be in a "blind spot" because their height is so short versus the height of the vehicle hood or tailgate.

That's why these new proximity sensor systems in vehicles are so great. They will save a lot of lives...

I’m not a big fan of those back up alarms they put in pick ups that detect objects in the path behind you, but something like this helps you understand what they’re aiming at.
