I'd be happy if I could afford even a well-stocked root cellar

Remember when “fallout shelters” were a selling point add-on for new home construction?

For those thinking of using shipping containers for their bunker, a word of caution. Dirt weighs a LOT. Wet dirt even more so. Shipping containers are not designed to withstand those stresses and un-insulated, they become water/humidity traps. Then moisture becomes rust and with enough rust comes failure.

Consider a solid foundation or footer with drainage from underneath. Also consider ICF (insulated concrete forms on the outside of the shipping containers to strengthen and insulate the bunker.

When I was a kid in Kansas in the 50’s, we lived across from the rail yards. Someone buried a rail tank car in our back yard. Don’t know if this was for tornado’s or civil defence, but us kids used it as a submarine.

We visited our friends in Switzerland. I think a bunker is still required. He also has to have a gun down there although he said it has not been cleaned or shot for years.

Yes we’re gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground

It’s just a dugout that my Dad built
In case the Reds decide to push the button down

We’ve got provisions and lots of beer
The key word is survival on the New Frontier

Why would you want the pool and bowling alley?

Google “T-62 Civilian Defense Carbine”. Blast those Rooskie paratroopers right out of the sky with this number.

The fallout shelter craze inspired several Twilight Zone episodes; the prepared vs the unprepared.

Our `prep’ consisted of a case of Hungarian canned bacon.

;^)

Years later my Dad bought a small cabin cruiser. Ice box, no fridge, small galley. That canned bacon made breakfast on board seem like the rich & famous!

But boy is it expensive now.

Sounds like the bunker doubles as a basement/rec room, which would be the smart way to use it. One would want a smaller, concealable area for food, water, weapons, etc., but there's no reason the entire facility has to be dead space -- especially since the chances of ever needing to use it as a bunker are (hopefully) remote, and you will be wanting to sell the house someday.

I’m told a can of bacon is equal to several packages of the fresh stuff.
Still pricey.

I’m selling this one at a considerably lower price if anyone’s interested. Pics and lots of detail at the link.

Why would you want the pool and bowling alley?

Because when you are done bowling, you can use one of the bowling balls to play Water Polo in the pool.

I figure it would need about $100K to make it livable.

Our original plan was to develop it into a secure storage facility. We estimated finishing that would take about $200-250K.
