Pence stresses 'era of strategic patience' over as he visits Korean DMZ

By Roberta Rampton and Lucia Mutikani | DEMILITARISED ZONE, SOUTH KOREA

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence looked across the demilitarized border between North and South Korea on Monday, a day after North Korea's failed missile launch, reiterating that the U.S. "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over.

Pence is on the first stop of a four-nation Asia tour intended to show America's allies - and remind its adversaries - that the Trump administration is not turning its back on the increasingly volatile region.

The demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a heavily mined, four-km-wide (2.5-mile-wide) strip of land lined with barbed wire running across the Korean peninsula, with soldiers on both sides in a continual eyeball-to-eyeball standoff.

If there was no cessation of war, just a cease fire, does Trump need congressional authorization to bomb NK nuke sites?

Not that it matters much, but someone here said that area is no longer referred to as the DMZ.

This area still exists and there is another name for it, but it escapes me right now.

Now that we are buddies with China so they can help us deal with NK, I guess we let them build more islands and military bases in the South China Sea.

The Military Demarcation Line (MDL), sometimes referred to as the Armistice Line, is the 154 mile-long land border or demarcation line between North Korea and South Korea. On either side of the line is the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Not sure if this helps...

Considering there was never a declaration of war to begin with...

I don’t know.

I don’t really know. I was just trying to relay information from another person that either served over there or keeps an eye on what’s happening in the Koreas for some reason.

FWIW I guess.

If Congress declared war, it wouldn’t be a surprise.

Reunification is a real possibility, just look at Germany. Reagan did it by “tearing down this wall.” 25 million people will be free to eat real food instead of grass and tree bark, join the real world, and a fat bellied dictator will be gone. Who can object to that?

Strategic patience should turn into a strategic strike taking out Kim Jong Un.

A few questions for Xi:

But inside the rocket’s shell was an array of electronics, including specialized pressure sensors, transmitters and circuitry. An extensive probe by U.S. and South Korean officials revealed that many of the components had been manufactured in Western countries and shipped to North Korea by Chinese distributors — a finding that was echoed in the United Nations Panel of Experts report made public on March 9.

You have the MDL and the JSA ( Joint Security Area ) the MDL is the DMZ, and the JSA is where all the dignitaries get their picture taken. The JSA is where the negotiating buildings are at.
