French is a whole 'nother language.

They have a lot of people named "The Young" (LeJeune) or "The King" (LeRoy) or "Of the Bridge" (DuPont) or "Of the Woods" (DuBois) (the de or du can imply real or fake aristocratic origins).

That's just the way they do it. It's not inherently more nonsensical than anything else in the world of language.
