Trump budges on border wall funding, easing shutdown standoff

President Trump began to edge away Monday evening from demanding funding for his promised border wall be included in a must-pass spending bill, reducing the chances of a government shutdown at the end of the week by making clear he’s flexible on that timeline.

Trump told a group of 20 conservative media reporters Monday evening that he would be willing to return to the wall funding issue in September, two people in the meeting said. His earlier demand that it be included represented a significant impasse in budget talks, and the latest comments potentially could pave the way for a bipartisan deal just days ahead of the government shutdown deadline.

White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway confirmed to “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning that the wall does not need to be funded this week, but she said it remains a “very important priority to [Trump].”

“Building that wall and having it funded remains an important priority to him, but we also know that that can happen later this year and into this year,” she said.

Congress is under pressure to pass a $1 trillion spending bill that would pay for government agencies; if the bill fails to pass by midnight Friday, it will trigger a partial government shutdown.

In the wake of Trump’s border wall comments, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., welcomed the approach. "It's good for the country that President Trump is taking the wall off the table in these negotiations," Schumer said late Monday. "Now the bipartisan and bicameral negotiators can continue working on the outstanding issues."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., also praised Trump’s announcement, calling it “welcomed news given the bipartisan opposition to the wall.”

So until then, the military will be sent to lock down the border? And private sources of funding can be used? Right?

Mick Mulvaney’s not gonna like this. He thinks government shutdown is no big deal.

...the military will be sent to lock down the border?

A 2000 mile-long, one mile-wide military base. A training camp for border control troops.

It's disappointing that he would back down without assuring Deplorables that he has found a way to get Mexico to pay for the wall. This AM on the news there was some talk that it would be put off until the autumn. That would mean it NEVER happens.

FWIW, the wall should've already been started before the enemy (ie: the uniparty) had time to regroup after the election shocker. Where are all those smart lawyers? It seems that AG Sessions is the only one who has demonstrated that level of loyalty and competence.

end of rant

Trump should just make the wall part of the infrastructure bill or find other ways to fund it.

1) $$ was authorized/allocated but not spent under Zero

2) DoD/ICE/Homeland & a dozen other Wall agencies have discretionary $$ that can be used for a YEAR.

I’m really stunned at the hysterical types here who don’t seem to get that ALL these stories are written with only one purpose: to try to separate Trump from his base, because they are absolutely finished if they can’t do that. (Remember the 94% who would vote for DT again? That is the end of libs if that holds up).

Of course there are some anti-Trump fifth columnists here who appear on every thread to bash Trump while pretending to care about either the constitution or Trump’s campaign promises.

Ryan gave Trump a right jab with ObamaCARE (now TrumpCARE),
and this will be his left hook.

The GOP-swamp is an Enemy of the American people.

If Trump isn't willing to shutdown the government he can ?Look forward to having Obama budgets for 4 years. He's showing weakness on this issue. What exactly was gained by all this shutdown talk if he wasn't willing to really fight for what he wants?

The main reason democrats oppose building a wall is because they know that if Trump reneges on his wall promise, there is no way he’ll be re-elected.

I accept that the articles are all skewed but if he doesn’t start building a wall then that is a huge loss. No spinning that. I’m willing to see where he goes with this but not sure why all the talk if you weren’t going to bat for this?

A clear example of the power of the open borders lobby in Congress.

The GOPe doing the bidding of their donors to the detriment of the American people yet again.

The congressional GOP is throwing away one opportunity after another for the status quo.

Remember, it's the Art of the Deal.

I think giving away leverage is in the preface.

Well that escalated quickly (or perhaps “de-escalated” would be more accurate to say).

Yeah, guys, it’s not getting built just like Obamacare repeal/replace ain’t happening. Not this year probably not ever.

Some may say, “why are you always so pessimistic 47, why can’t you just trust Trump in his clever ways? You’re always so critical are you rooting for his demise!?” First because I’m a realist. Campaign promises are one thing, the reality of Washington DC establishment is another. I’ve written on this at length in other posts I won’t again. Suffice to say Trump knew this (and thus promised bullcrap in the campaign) or was blissfully unaware. It’s immaterial which (to me) as I didn’t vote for him based on these pie-in-the-sky promises. I voted for him to stop the Witch (check), nominate and get confirmed a conservative judge to the SC (check) and to deport illegals immediately, all he’s able to do under the current law (check and continues to be done). So I’m happy.

Secondly, and more to any point about negativism on my part, I’m actually trying to HELP the president by pointing out these campaign wishes and caviar dreams are actually fantasies. How? How does this help?

Because hopefully his supporters who believed every stupid fantasy uttered from his lips during the campaign and who are now getting angry at him for not following through, hopefully such people will realize their error and continue to support him. Because he needs all our support, to continue the great work he’s started.

So put away the fantasy and face reality. The wall isn’t getting built, at least not any time soon. And its all a-ok really. Because it’s not something he was ever going to be able to deliver. Anyone who has ever lived in the D.C. area, who has ever worked for the government as a contractor or as an employee thereof, knows how this place operates. And it certainly is not in service of the country.

It’s just reality, it’s best not to fight it. It’s like spitting into the wind if you do. It’s better for your health if you don’t.

This is Congress ..not business.

So you give up the only leverage you have at the moment. What are you going to use to get the dems on board. You will have to cave on what they want
