California weighs huge health care remake - dumping insurers
San Jose Mercury-News ^ | April 26, 2017 | By JONATHAN J. COOPER

A proposal considered by California lawmakers would substantially remake the health care system of the nation’s most populous state by eliminating insurance companies and guaranteeing coverage for everyone.

The idea known as single-payer health care has long been popular on the left and is getting a new look in California as President Donald Trump struggles to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s health care law.

The proposal, promoted by the state’s powerful nursing union and two Democratic senators, is a longshot. But supporters hope the time is right to persuade lawmakers in California, where Democrats like to push the boundaries of liberal public policy and are eager to stand up to the Republican president.

The measure would guarantee health coverage with no out-of-pocket costs for all California residents, including people living in the country illegally.

Private insurers would be barred from covering the same services, essentially eliminating them from the marketplace. Instead, a new state agency would contract with health care providers such as doctors and hospitals and pay the bills for everyone.

However, an essential question is still unanswered: Where will the money come from?

Most members of California public employee unions and the teachers union are covered by Kaiser. I wonder if they are dumb enough to destroy Kaiser? (yes, probably).

I was really hoping Vermont would be the guinea pig.

We could absorb epic failure in a state with 600,000 residents. Then no one else would try.

When California tries and fails it is liable to bring down the whole economy.

I agree, but isn’t this federalism? Didn’t TN and VT attempt universal state healthcare?

Repeal Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid and leave healthcare to the states.

When people finally get tired of the gimmick life and the Silicon Valley tech bubble bursts, California’s wealth will dwindle and there’ll be no money left to pay for this kind of folly - it’ll be fun to watch the panic and bitterness that follows......

My bet is the sh*theads under the dome in sacramento know this and will try to call the feds bluff. Their thinking? CA is too big to fail. The feds will HAVE TO bail us out.

Once everyone sees the hollywierd elite and silicon valley moguls in line with them at their neighborhood free-clinic, I am sure then it will be considered a success. I suppose these doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics etc. will all become state properties and employees.

Didn’t TN and VT attempt universal state healthcare?

Vermont certainly tried, and here is how the NY Times reported the results:

"But Mr. Shumlin and his advisers concluded the plan would require “enormous” new taxes, including an 11.5 percent payroll tax on all Vermont businesses and a sliding-scale income tax of up to 9.5 percent. In all, he said when he announced that he was shelving it, the plan would require about $2.5 billion in additional revenue in its first year, in a state that raises only about $2.7 billion in taxes annually."
