Undoubtedly they will go after the rifle rather that the bad guys wielding it. To the left, the inanimate object is always at fault. It’s never the person doing the deed.

I think, at the root, they have a wrong-headed anthropology. They think people* are basically all good, which means that, if they do bad things, it's something in their environment that made them bad. Therefore it's the gun's fault, or poverty's fault, or capitalism's fault, or global warming's fault, or ...
*Except conservatives. Logical consistency isn't their strong suit.
