A state representative from Winona who urged in a weekend Facebook post that those who support the removal of Confederate monuments be lynched has apologized.
Rep. Karl Oliver, R-Winona, wrote: “The destruction of these monuments, erected in the loving memory of our family and fellow Southern Americans, is both heinous and horrific. If the, and I use this term extremely loosely, “leadership” of Louisiana wishes to, in a Nazi-ish fashion, burn books or destroy historical monuments of OUR HISTORY, they should be LYNCHED! Let it be known, I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening in our State.”
Oliver emailed a statement late Monday morning saying “I deeply regret that i chose this word.” However the Facebook post had not been deleted at the time of his apology.
House Speaker Philip Gunn condemned Oliver’s post in an emailed statement Monday morning. The comments “do not reflect the views of the Republican Party, the leadership of the House of Representatives or the House as a whole,” Gunn said.
“Using the word ‘lynched’ is inappropriate and offensive,” Gunn continued. “We call on Rep. Oliver to apologize.”
Gov. Phil Bryant released a statement in an email: “Rep. Oliver’s language is unacceptable and has no place in civil discourse.”

Not good enough. I would have said, "Those removing Confederate monuments should be shipped in the holds of sailing vessels to America, where they would be bought and sold, in chains, like draft animals. Then they would be put to work on a southern cotton or tobacco plantations, and when they looked at a proper woman wrong, they would be lynched by white-hooded and white-sheet-wearing clansmen."
No different than ISIS erasing monuments and history in the middle east
What is actually inappropriate and offensive, unacceptable and has no place in civil society, is the removal of history whether you like it or not....
Okay to lynch southern history though.
Yes, the word “lynching” is inflammatory, I apologize. They should be shot where they stand and left to the crows.
Those removing Confederate monuments should be counted as being only 2/3’s-a-person in the Census.
Those removing Confederate monuments should be denied reparations, in the form of 40 acres and a mule.
His choice of words may not have been politically correct, but I sure don’t disagree with him.
On a positive note, with civil war history being destroyed means that it never happened and slavery was a myth. So that means reparations and affirmative actions are totally false narratives.
Those removing Confederate monuments should be shipped to Liberia by President Abraham Lincoln.
Those who support the removal of Confederate monuments are vandalizing an important part of American history. It is like well-meaning Germans eliminating their history out of shame...but these events happened. Let the monuments be reminders of history.
Those removing Confederate monuments should be bred, by plantation owners, in a way that increases their strength and resiliance.

Those removing Confederate monuments should be captured after escaping and trying to get to the Underground Railroad. They should be returned to their rightful owners.

Seems like more of a local/state issue to me.
Its not the Federal government ordering these statues be taken down, its local elected officials with support from their constituents...and no state level preservation legislation was enacted to prevent them from doing so.
I agree with Mr. Oliver and applaud him for speaking out on this matter.
The Washington monument has got to go.
If we demolish all references to the Confederacy, can we then deny that slavery never existed?
