US secretary of state flies to Britain to say sorry for Manchester leaks

Rex Tillerson’s unprecedented public apology in person shows seriousness of rift over intelligence sharing...

The US secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, has flown to the UK to deliver in person an apology for leaks by US officials of details of the police investigation into the Manchester bombing.

Tillerson, who met the foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, said: “We take full responsibility for that and we obviously regret that that happened. With respect to the release of information inappropriately … certainly we condemn that.”

Such a public apology by a senior US politician – and flying to London specifically to make it – is unprecedented in US-UK relations. That the Trump administration felt the need to make such a gesture illustrates the seriousness of this week’s rift.

The Greater Manchester police force and the London-based counter-terrorism team suspended intelligence sharing with the FBI and other police counterparts on Thursday but it was restored after Donald Trump intervened to say the justice department would investigate the leaks.

So we not only have the intelligence community leaking to sabotage Trump’s presidency, we now have to apologize to other nations for it. These leakers are committing crimes and disrupting foreign relations to further their own petty, personal interests - they deserve lengthy prison sentences and hopefully they will get them.

It’s long past time that anyone in a position to have leaked info was told to report for lie detector tests, or be fired.

An Obama mole “leaked” the name of the mass murderer for this purpose - to put the blame on President Trump’s team. Liberals disgust me.

Even if some thought before it was business as usual, the Trump administration is resetting everything. It is illegal to leak classified information. How dare you betray our sensitive agreements with one of our best foreign friends.

“...we defend democracy and the rule of law, our values and our freedoms – not just because they are ours but because they are universal.”

Our values are universal?

Not hardly. Why would he say that?

The article’s premise is conjecture.

Tillerson did not fly to the freaking UK to deliver an apology.

Moreover, it seems improbable one country suspended sharing intelligence for oh what? All of 24 hours?

Gimme a break.

Where did the New York Times actually get their info from?

The things they claim to be “leaks” appeared in their own press and other European press, and I think the claim that the US did it is just an attempt to cover up their total incompetence in preventing terrorist attacks even though they actually have intelligence on these threats. They want to cover up the connection with Islam and with “refugees,” and they were probably hoping they could continue with the ridiculous meme that it was a “popping balloon” or just a random explosion of some sort.

Trying to deflect attention to us, however, has given Trump a great opportunity to look deep into the FBI and find out what the heck is really going on in that politicized and incompetent organization. Like its Brit counterparts, it has also investigated and followed virtually all of the terrorists involved in US attacks, and has even gotten foreign intelligence on them - and done nothing until dead Americans are lying all over the place. So yes, there’s a problem.

I'm unhappy that President Trump is going back to the WH without these traitors, and anyone who had knowledge of whom it is but didn't report them, hauled away in handcuffs and charged with treason. President Trump CANNOT stop the coup if these people are free. This far in, it's tough to blame what Obama left behind. One can only believe some of the leakers were brought in with the Trump team, folks who aren't loyal to all we hold dear.

JMHO

I report that he flew there to bring back some super secret intelligence that could only be divulged in person, under the cone of silence.
